Mills takes oath of office
-Joe Brady
The Sylvania Times
Laura Abercrombie Mills officially took her seat on the Syl
vania City Council at last week’s regularly scheduled meeting.
She was sworn in by Sylvania Mayor Preston Dees. The city
council is made up of the mayor and six council members.
Each council member represents an equal number of residents
in the city and is elected at-large, not by district or ward.
Laura and her husband Patrick have three daughters. One of
which, Caitlyn, is in the GA Air National Guard with her hus
band and father, Patrick. Laura also volunteers with the Family
Readiness Program. She and Patrick are the proud grandparents
of one grandson.
“I’m a service-oriented person and during the landfill discus
sion several years ago, I felt a calling to run for political office.
The preacher’s daughter in me thought long and hard about
what God wanted me to do,” Laura said in a recent interview
with The Sylvania Times. See MILLS page 6

Ogeechee Creek Bridge
to close for repairs
-Joe Brady
Sylvania Times Editor
The Ogeechee Creek Bridge
located between Buck Road and
Waters Station Road will close
to thru traffic for approximately
180 days (about 6 months)
beginning Monday. This is
made possible by a bridge
replacement project designed
by Georgia DOT’S Low Impact
Bridge Program. A spokesperson
with Georgia DOT explained
in a written statement to The
Sylvania Times, “most bridges
in Georgia are locally owned.
The Low Impact Bridge Program
and Local Bridge Replacement
Program helps local governments
replace deficient bridges.
The contractor selected
to perform the work on the
Ogeechee Creek Bridge,
Clearwater Construction will
prepare and maintain the detour
around the closure of the bridge,
which utilizes Waters Station
Road, US 301/State Route 73,
Goloid Church Road, Buck
Road and Ogeechee Road. The
Georgia DOT spokesperson said,
“Motorists can access residences
up to the work zone but for the
public safety, unauthorized
personnel and motorized
vehicles will not be permitted in
the 0.16 mile construction zone.”
