reports theft
-Joe Brady
Sylvania Times Editor
The Sylvania Police Department received a call last Monday at approximately
4 p.m. in reference to a theft at Ray’s Service Station. Lester Lariscy told law
enforcement that “someone has been cutting off catalytic converters from two
vehicles.” Lariscy further identified a red ford pickup and a gold jeep that had
the converters removed between Friday and Monday when he discovered the
theft.
Chief Shane Burke said in a statement, “we have made an arrest for theft by
receiving stolen goods, however the investigation remains active.”
Catalytic converters are being stolen across the country and the neighboring
counties have felt the pinch. In July, Jenkins County experienced the theft of the
catalytic converters from county vehicles. Because of the precious metals such
as rhodium, platinum, and palladium.

Spike and Alyssa Albritton are the new faces of Red
Bluff Baptist Church. Spike was named the new pastor in
November. “We prayed as a family for God to lead us to a
community where we could do the most good.”
This is Pastor Spike’s first church. He started in the
ministry twenty years ago in Jacksonville, FL., and has been
in Folkston, GA for the last nine years at People’s Baptist
Church. “We purchased an 11-acre island on the Savannah
River to be used as a youth camp and wanting to be closer
we saw an advertisement that Red Bluff Baptist Church
needed a new pastor. Here we are.”
Spike and Alyssa have been married 24 years and have 7
children. Alyssa takes care of the children, “that is a full
time job in itself,” she says. Spike travels during the week
to Folkston where the couple own a liquidation business.
Red Bluff Baptist Church was chartered in 1874 with
just 9 members: J.T. Humphries, Lily Humphries, Sarah
Andrews, C.H. Moore, Mary J. Newton, Martha Walker,
Sarah Williams, and George Williams.
For 147 years. Red Bluff Baptist Church has been a beacon
of hope to the community it serves. “God’s plans for any
church is to grow spiritually and physically. We plan on
becoming more involved in the community and to get the
word of God out,” explained Pastor Spike.
Sunday worship services are held every Sunday at 11 a.m.
with Sunday School at 10 a.m. Wednesday night bible study
is at 6 p.m. “I would like to thank Danny Jenkins for leading
the church while they searched for a pastor. He has been a
great source of strength for the church,” Spike concludes.

The pandemic is not over yet as we all see by the escalating active cases of COVID. As of January 17,
2022, the county has risen steadily to 289 cases based on antigen and PCR tests. The positivity rate for
the previous fourteen days is 47.6%. In January of 2021 we had 210 cases for the entire month.
According to the CDC, it is unknown how easily Omicron spreads compared to the Delta variant.
Current vaccines are expected to protect against severe illness, hospitalizations, and deaths due to in
fection with the Omicron variant. With other variants, vaccines have proven to remain effective against
preventing severe illness, hospitalizations, and even death.
Ross Drugs is offering testing Monday-Friday from 8-5 except 12-1 for lunch. Persons are urged to
call first for testing and to stay in your vehicle. All three vaccines are available.
Ross Drugs is also offering a Covid Vaccination Clinic this Friday, Jan. 21 from 3-5 p.m. for children
ages 5-11 years. “You must have an appointment to get the vaccine. We only have twenty available,”
urges Chris Griner, co-owner of Ross Drugs. The drug store may be reached at 912-564-7002 to sched
ule the appointment.
Vaccines are also offered at Walgreens and the Screven County Health Department, (photo by Sarah
