There wasn’t an empty
spot in the Longhorn
Steakhouse parking lot
Friday morning when
hungry patrons flocked to
the restaurant to be
served breakfast by their
favorite local celebrities.
The 10th annual
Celebrity Waiter
Breakfast fundraiser for
Dawson County Family
Connection saw hundreds
of customers lined up for
delicious food and great
service provided by
familiar faces in the com
munity.
“Everyone just seems
to be really happy,” said
Family Connection
Coordinator Nancy Stites
as she surveyed the res
taurant. “People are
enjoying themselves. We
want Dawson to enjoy
being around neighbors.
It’s a great way to start
the weekend off right.”
Customers were treated
to a variety of breakfast
favorites, from scrambled
eggs, fresh fruit and hash
browns to French toast,
sausage, bacon, biscuits
and muffins. There was
something for everyone
to enjoy at the June 1
breakfast.
Dr. Larry Anderson has
been a celebrity waiter
since the fundraiser’s
beginning, but this year
he didn’t don the apron.
Instead he came as a cus
tomer for the first time,
still showing his support
for a great cause.
“It’s nice to be a cus
tomer,” Anderson said.
“Everybody focuses on
being a service leader
here in Dawson County
and that’s what I love
about Dawson.”
Courtney Harris, owner
of Popcorn Penguin’s
Balloons, floated around
the room, making color
ful balloon animals for
eager children who
couldn’t wait to play with
the balloon poodles, mon
keys and dinosaurs.
Harris said she donated
her time and all the tips
she raised were donated
to Dawson County
Family Connection.

in grading, road installation
By Allie Dean

City residents will at last see dirt moving behind
the Dawsonville Municipal Complex as the city
council on Monday voted to award a $1,454,169.54
contract to TW Phillips Grading for phase one con
struction of Main Street Park.
TW Phillips Grading was one of two bids received
and was the low bid by about $6,000.
The council voted 3-0 to approve the bid, with
council member Caleb Phillips abstaining from any
discussion or vote as he is related to the proprietor
of the company that will be performing the work.
The funds for phase one of the project will come
from SPLOST VI and the construction timeline is
120 days. This phase will consist of installing a road
that runs through the park as well as grading and
grassing the land.

Comcast offers gigabit services to some Dawson customers
By Allie Dean
adean@dawsonnews.com
According to an announce
ment made Tuesday, Comcast
has completed a 12-mile fiber
network designed to deliver
gigabit speeds to residents and
businesses in close proximity
to the North Georgia Premium
Outlets.
So far, Comcast has com
pleted a fiber backbone in the
Ga. 400 area that will provide
10-gigabit internet service to
the area’s businesses, as well
as 1-gigabit speeds to single
family homes at Black Mill
Preserve on Red Rider Road
and the apartments that are
under construction behind the
Publix shopping center.
Alex Horwitz, vice president
of public relations for
Comcast, said that the 1-gig
provided in residential service
delivers incredibly fast down
load speeds.
“When we announced the
service in Atlanta a couple of
years ago, we had a demo, an
open house where people
could come and see the ser
vice,” Horwitz said. “Using the
1 -gig service we downloaded a
movie like if you were going
on a trip and you wanted to
watch it on your iPad.
Normally something that
would have taken a long time
to download; it downloaded in
five or six seconds.
“So for all the families who
have, let’s say four people in a
household, the kids are on the
XBOX Live and the parents
are on their laptops or iPads,
there is a constant crunch of
bandwidth. When you bring
gigabit technology into the
equation, that goes away.”
The telecommunications
company is encouraging
potential customers to contact
them and ask for service at
their home or business.
Expansion outside of the 400
corridor will be based on
opportunity, according to
Shawn Geagan, vice president
of business development with
Comcast. Geagan is in charge
of identifying areas where the
company can build out and
deliver gigabit speeds to grow
ing areas like Dawson County.
