14 THE BULLETIN OF THE CATHOLIC LAYMEN’S ASSOCIATION OF GEORGIA ARE WE UNDER A NEW REFORMATION? (FROM THE PIKE COUNTY JOURNAL, ZEBULON, GEORGIA) Two Catholic Priests killed and one of the most noted school teachers deprived of her position, all because she was a Catholic, makes a new role of re formation by the Protestants. A Preacher in a Protestant church killed one Priest because he had performed the marriage cere mony making his daughter the wife of a Catholic. Another Priest foully murdered by an unknown party. All this harps back to the dark ages when force was used to build up religious faith. We had concluded that the Christian era had brought better feelings to all the people confessing Christ as their example, but the beastly side of the human family crops out, as it does in the lower ani mals, at an unexpected time. We are sincerely of the opinion that certain prop aganda circulated among the people generally is woring a leaven of hellishness that will be of incal culable shame to religious faith. This same matter is being used to embitter a certain class of people, who are uninformed, against the Catholic faith and its adherents. We know that there is too much bit terness among several of the protestant sects which is not after godliness. There is too great a ten dency to try to break down Catholicism by persecu tion and many other devious ways. Catholicism has stood unshaken for centuries, and is growing by leaps and bounds until now there are three hundred million of the believers. The largest protestant faith is the Lutherans, and next comes the Methodist church, with little over six million communicants. The Baptist have about five million. The Catholics have practically three hundred million souls to its credit. With the ex ception of France, the protestant faith has no coun try captivated in which they have spent millions upon millions of dollars. In our own country it is said that the heathens are gaining among us by far faster than we are converting them. They have many heathen tem ples in the north, and among the most refined and cultured people they count their converts. There is a great fad in many sections of the country known as the Occult Science, this is a form of heathenism that was brought here by Priests from Turkey, Hin dustan and other countries, and many of our sup posedly enlightened Christians are fast falling into it. The Missionaries of every diabolical faith upon earth are working America, and in many instances with good results from their standpoint. The religious faith of America is a heterogene ous compound, with many doubts and fears about what is the true way. It is said of people in foreign countries that they ask, why do you people kill each other over religion and other matters and expect us to be your followers ? This of course is a hard nut for the average man to crack, and we seriously doubt that any of the missionaries can give them a satisfactory answer. It appears that we had better clean our house before too many invitations are ex tended to others to visit our religion premesis. We believe the murder of these two priests is a blackened shame that will soil the escutcheon of our protestant priest also. While certain papers are al lowed to scatter such diabolical matter unhindered over the country, religion will assume a lower ebb among all the protestant faiths. The Catholic Church has been a grand old church, yet in darker days she has committed sins in the name of Christ, as others are doing and have done now. Recently one of our Senators from Georgia said that there were (expressing terms in thousands) girls gone astray, and he could prove that they had been enticed into the homes of Catholic Priests. Upon this declaration we wrote the Senator as to where he got his information, as we wanted to know as a matter of information, as we made some study of religious matters. No answer was received. We are not writing this as defense of Catholicism, as we believe it needs none such, but we are writing it for reproof of my own, as well as others sects and that includes all the protestant faiths, of their lack of liberality and acts toward other denominations not befitting the calling of Christ’s people. We be lieve that the United States should suppress all such inflamatory matter. Should matters continue as they are, there is no doubt that things will grow from bad to worse, until life and property will be unsafe, and all these sins will be committed in the name of Christ. SAVANNAH HISTORICAL SKETCHES (Continued from Page 6) rented for the purpose. The “machine” consisted of a barrel half-filled with g'un-powder and strength ened with iron hoops and covered with tarred cloth, all of which was prepared in the house of Carbon’s sister, citizeness Vallon, who was a laundress in the Rue St. Martin. On the 24th of December Limoelan and his two companions appeared at the house with the horse and wagon. All three were dressed as common la borers, and when they appeared dragging the heavy barrel and hoisting it on the empty cart, no suspi cion could have been aroused. This was early in the evening. At a slow walk they proceeded through the Rue Neuve Egalite toward the Carrousel—a fairly large square, opening on the stables of Bona parte. Limoelan held the bridle while his com panions, under pretense of supporting the cargo, were constantly dropping pebbles into the barrel through the partly open top. The night was cold and damp and foggy, and as most of the people were in their homes preparing for the Christmas cele bration, the trio attracted little or no attention. When they reached the Carrousel it was seven o’clock, and they knew they would have yet an hour to wait before Bonaparte would appear on the scene. They stopped the wagon just a few steps from the square and St. Regant inserted a fuse from the bottom. He lit his pipe so fire could be applied quickly; and they all figured that it would take six or seven seconds for the fire to reach the powder, and meanwhile they could make good their escape. In order to divert suspicion from themselves, St. Regant hailed a little girl about fourteen years of age and by offering her a few sous persuaded her to hold the horse. Bonaparte Appears. At eight o’clock the party of Bonaparte suddenly appeared with the advance guard at full gallon to wards the spot where the conspirators stood. Lim-
