DECEMBER 21, 1937 THE BULLETIN OF THE CATHOLIC LAYMEN’S ASSOCIATION OF GEORGIA ELEVEN JUNIOR FEDERATION MEETING IN ALBANY Aquinas Club Host to Quarterly Convention in November (Special to The Bulletin) ALBANY, Ga. — The Aquinas Club of St. Theresa s Church here was host to the quarterly convention of the Georgia Federation of Junior Ca tholic Clubs, a meeting attended by about 150 delegates from Columbus, Macon, Atlanta, Savannah, Quitman, Valdosta, Thomasville, LaGrange, Rome and Douglas The convention opened with Mass at St Theresa's Church, the Rev. Thomas A. Brennan, pastor, followed by a meeting and banquet at Hotel Gordon, and an afternoon meeting at the American Legion Club House. Father Brennan delivered the ser mon at the Mass, welcoming the dele gates, and the speakers at the ban quet included Father Brennan, Fath er Sheehan, Father Manning and Father Doona. Music for the Mass was rendered by a choir of federa tion members. One of the features of the conven tion reports was that dealing with the organization of the study club work, providing instruction on reli gious subjects over a period from De cember to May. A buffet supper closed the day’s meeting; the eve ning before the delegates and visitors were entertained at a dance and so cial at the Elks’ Club. The February meeting was awarded to the Blessed Channel Club of Atlanta. Officers of the federation are Alton Baumgartner, Atlanta, president; Helen Nahara, Douglas, vice-presi dent; Rosa Johann, Atlanta, secretary; Rene Martin, Atlanta, treasurer. Gecrgia Represented Ly Stephens Mitchell Appointed by Governor Riv ers for Constitution Pro gram at Washington (Special to The Bulletin) ATLANTA, Ga. — Stephens Mit chell, president of the Atlanta Bar Association and active in the Vincen tians, the Catholic Laymen’s Asso ciation and other Catholic organiza tions, was appointed by Governor Rivers to represent Georgia with representatives of the other thir teen original colonies, also appointed by their respective governors, at the Catholic observance of the sesquicen- tennial of the signing of the Consti tution of the United States. Among those participating in the program were Justice Butler of the United States Supreme Court, Senators, Governors and other notables. MRS. AGNES GREDIG IS DEAD IN BROOKLYN Native of Savannah Wife of Former Georgia News paperman Merry Christmas ANDREWS’ BROS. Augusta, Ga. (Special to The Bulletin) SAVANNAH, Ga. — Mrs. Agnes Ceropley Gredig, a native of Savan nah and wife of William Gredig, for mer Georgia newspaper man, died in Brooklyn late in November after an extended illness. Mrs. Gredig’s hus band was connected with the Augus ta Herald, the Athens Banner and the Atlanta Constitution before go ing to the East Mrs. Agnes Scott of Columbus is Mrs. Gredig’s daughter, and Mrs. Walter P. Powers and Mrs. Rita A. Stuart of Savannah her nieces. In Savannah Mrs. Gredig was a member of Cathedral parish. The Rt Rev. Msgr. Joseph F. Croke, rec tor of the Cathedral, officiated at file funeral services here, with inter ment in Laurel Grove Cemetery MRS. MARIE GEARON DIES IN SAVANNAH Mrs. Marie Gearon, widow of the late J. F. Gearon, died late in No vember. Mrs. Gearon was a member of Cathedral parish; the funeral was held from the Cathedral with a Req uiem Mass. Interment was in Cathe dral Cemetery. Surviving Mrs. Ger- on are her daughter, Miss Mary Ger- on, her brother, R. A. Beytagh, and a number of cousins. FUNERAL IN SAVANNAH OF WILLIAM ROCHE William Roche, a stone contractor here for forty years, during which time he worked an a number of the finest buildings in the city, died af ter a long illness. Bom in Savannah. May 26, 1869, he was a lifelong res ident of, the city. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Grace Schultz Roche, his brother, Henry J. Roche, and two sisters, Mrs, May Kennedy and Mrs. Gertrude Brown. TTie funeral was held from Sacred Heart Church with interment in Laurel Grove Cemetery. DIANA EVANS, four-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Evans, died late in November. The Very Rev. Boniface Bauer, O. S. B., officiated at the funeral; interment was in Laurel Grove Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Evans and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Mitchell are the grand parents. JOHN WM. MILES DIES IN SAVANNAH John William. Miles, a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, died early in December after a long illness. Sur viving Mr. Miles are his wife, Mrs. Emma Walker Miles; four sons, John, Jr., Robert, Thomas and Clyde Miles: two brothers, Thomas T. Miles cf Honolulu and Robert P. of Sacramen to, CaL, and his sister, Miss Annie L. Mies of Summerville, S. C. FUNERAL IN SAVANNAH OF JAMES E. MURRIN The funeral of James Edgar Murrin a native of Savannah where he was born forty years ago, was held from the Blessed Sacrament Church, of which he was a member. Mr. Murrin was connected with the Central of Georgia Railroad, and is survived by his wife, Mrs. Loretta. H. Murrin; two sons, Michael and James E. Murrin, Jr., and his sister, Mis Edith Murrin of Washington, D. C ARTHUR J. CONNOLLY IS DEAD IN ATLANTA Devoted Member of Sacred Heart Parish Dies at 53 (Special to The Bulletin) ATLANTA, Ga—Arthur Joseph Connolly, Sr., widely known in At lanta business circles and a promi nent member of Sacred Heart parish, died here December 13 from a heart attack at the age of 53. Mr. Con nolly was a native of Atlanta, the son of Mrs. John T. Connolly and thel ate Mr. Connolly; his mother was the former Miss Lula Lynch. He was a life-long resident of the city, and for a number of years he had been connected with the Atlanta Paper Company. Mr. Connolly was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Holy Name Society of Sacred Heart Church and of the Knights of Colum bus, and was one of the group which made the retreats annually at Wash ington under the auspices of the Lay men’s Association. Everything Ca tholic had his hearty co-operation. Surviving Mr. Connolly in addition to his wife and mother are his daugh ter, Miss Doris Connolly; his son, A. Joseph Connolly, Jr.; his sister, Mrs. G. B. Adair and his brother, Hugh O. Connolly. The funeral was held from Sacred Heart Church with a Requim Mass, the Rev. Edward P. McGrath, S. M., offiicating, assisted by priests of the city. Interment was in West View Cemetery. CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS DEC. 23 TO JAN. 3 The Christmas holidays of file schools of the Diocese of Savannah-At lanta will start December 23 and end January 3. MRS. LEWIS E. LA WES, a member of St. Augustine's parish, Ossining, N. Y., and wife of the warden of Sing Sing prison, was killed in a fall from a ledge while she was walking near the prison early in November. Constitution the Subject The pastors and teachers of the Catholic schools of Georgia are re minded of the Bishop O’Hara Essay Contest on the Constitution of the United States, announced in the pre vious issue by the Rev, T. J. Mc Namara, Dioiesan Superintendent of Schools, and open to pupils in the eighth or comparable grade in the schools. Three prizes will be awarded, one for the children of the parochial schools for white children, and one for public school children in cities where there is no parochial school; the prize in each case is twenty-five dollars. The rules and regulations may be se cured by writing to Father McNamara at Milledgeville, or to The Bulletin. FLOURISHING SOCIETIES IN PARISH IN ATLANTA (Special to The Bulletin) ATLANTA. Ga.—The St. Anthony’s Needlework Guild, a branch of the na tional organization making wearing apparel for distribution to hospitals and institutions and through organiza tions like the St. Vincent de Paul So ciety, is particularly active during these days of distress. Mrs. T. W. Dealy is president, Mrs. Marie Bris bane vice-president, Mrs. J. W. Mass- eling secretary and Mrs. J. I. Oberst is treasurer. This organization was er roneously referred to as the St. An thony Guild in a recent issue of The Bulletin. The St. Anthony Guild is headed by Mrs. Oberst as president, Mrs. Leo Volker vice-president, Mrs. J. H. Cahill secretary and Mrs. S. G. Harper treasurer. The St. Anthony Guild serves as the altar society and is engaged in other kindred activities.
