Christmas Supplement) Although the custom of erecting and adorning Christinas trees is firmly established in the Anglo- Saxon observance erf the season, authorities insist that the practice originated in Germany. The custom was introduced in Eng land, authorities contend, by Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s eonsort. Prince Albert was from Thuringia. order teaching also at St Benedict’s. CHARLES LATEST OF NOTABLE LINE OF BENEDICTINES THERE Abbot Charles and Abbot Vincent Former Pastors. Father Charles , Former Belmont Cathedral Rector ‘Hie Rev. Charles Castner, O. S. B., pastor of St Benedict's Church, Greensboro, X. C., has the distinc tion of having had two Benedictine Abbots among his predecessors, the 'late Rt. Rev. Charles Mohr, O. S. B., D. D., beloved founder of St Leo’s Abbey in Florida, who was in charge of Greensboro as a mission center over a half-century ago, and fee Rt. Rev. Vincent Taylor, O. S. B., D. D., Abbot-Ordinary of Bel mont who was pastor there for a quarter of a century and at the time he was called to head Belmont Ab bey as Abbot-Ordinary. In fee days of Abbot Charles, Greensboro was a mission center for such places as- WinSton-Salem and Salisbury, now mission centers them selves. In addition to Abbot Vincent, other recent pastors at Greensboro included Father Lawrence McHale, O. S. B , and Father Eugene Egan, O. S. B. Father Charles is a native of Balti more, where he was born August 16, 1697. He attended Fourteen Holy Martyrs parish school there, Loyola College, Baltimore said St. Vincent’s College, Latrobe, Pa., then going to Belmont Abbey College, where he was professed as a Benedictine monk June 16, 1918. Father Castner made his studies in philosophy and the ology at Belmont and was ordained June 3, 1923. After ordination, Father Charles spent two years at St. Joseph’s Insti tute, Bristow, Va^ returning to the Cathedral at Belmont in 1325 as as- •sastant pastor. In 1926 he was ap pointed pastor at fee Cathedral at Belmont, a post he filled until his appointment at St. Benedict’s Greensboro, last year. At Belmont, Father Charles organ ized several lay groups and did par ticularly effective work also in or ganizing bus transportation for chil dren of school age in fee district so that they might attend the Catholic schools at Belmont. He is a retreat- master of note, having given retreats in many states, and he has also given his motion picture lecture. on the Mass in a number of cities and states. For several years his Catholic Hour addresses were one of the most pop ular features over WBT. Charlotte. Father Charles has a sister who is a Passionist Nun. His father was or ganist at the parish church in Balti more for many years before his death not long ago; Father Charles’ moth er is now keeping house for him in Greensboro.
