Break Ground
For New School
At Brunswick
BRUNSWICK — Following a
ground-breaking ceremony at
which the Rev. James Cummings,
S. M., officiated assisted by the
Rev. Joseph Kane, S. M., and the
Rev. Albert Hebert, S. M., con
struction began on the new
school for the parish of St. Fran
cis Xavier, Brunswick.
The school will be located on a
site running from Union to Reyn
olds Street directly east of the
present school, which is at 1120
Richmond Street, The new struc
ture will be of contemporary de
sign, providing eight 40-pupil
classrooms, a kindergarten, li
brary, cafeteria-auditorium, kitch
en, health room, principal’s office,
and teacher’s lounge.
The new school, a one-story
structure was d e s i g n e d by
Cormac McGarvey, architect. It
will be built around an open
court and will have outside cor
ridors between the classrooms.
The building will be 127 feet wide
and 166 feet deep. On the out
side walls there will be large
metal windows and celerestory
windows in the walls facing the
court over the passageways. Con
struction will be of masonry,
with brick forming the exterior
and concrete block the interior of
the cavity-type walls. The floors
will be terrazo. The heating will

be furnished by a central warm
water system. The roof will be
of soffit slab porex, made locally
by the Concrete Products Co.,
and widely used throughout the
Southeast for school construction.
In charge of construction is E. F.
Higginbotham, Jr. Completion of
the project is aimed for Septem
ber. The estimated cost is $150,-
000.
The new building will replace
the present frame structure, built
under the guidance of the late
Rev. P. J. Luckie, S.M., in 1902.

ATLANTA—The first meeting
of Knights of Columbus Council
4420 was held in St. Johns Cafe
teria, May 8th, with forty mem
bers present. This new council
will be known as IMMACULATE
HEART OF MARY COUNCIL.
The following officers were
elected: Grand Knight, Tom Ber
gen; Deputy Grand Knight, Larry
Cudsik; chancellor, Stephen Kas-
merski; warden, J. Deckbar; trea
surer, James Sedlack; financial
secretary, Gene Mitchell; record
ing secretary, Ed Schattle; inside
and outside guards, Brothers
George, Fox and Louth; advocate,
Linus Zukas. Father Daly will be
asked to be our chaplain.
A committee was appointed to
select a site’for the new council
home, which will be located in
the West End area. The Council
desires a site large enough for a
swimming pool, picnic grounds,
and grills for social gatherings.
For the present, meetings are
being held in St. John’s cafeteria
and St. Anthony’s auditorium.
The next meeting will be at St.
Anthony’s at 8:30 p. m., May 27th.
The following meetings will be at
St. John’s on the 2nd Monday,
and St. Anthony’s on the 4th Mon
day of each month.

Jr., has been elected to serve as
president of The Serra Club of
Metropolitan Atlanta for the term
starting June 1.

The new Serra president, is
president of Golian Steel and
Iron Company of Atlanta. He is
a director from Georgia to the
National Society of Professional
Engineers. A graduate of the U.
S. Naval Academy, during World
War II he was in . command of a
destroyer, the USS Flusser. Mr.
deGoldian holds the Legion of
Merit and Bronze Star medals and
is retired in the rank of. Captain,
USNR. A member of Christ the
King parish, he is married to the
former Helen Dufour Rathbone of
Austin, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. de
Golian have five sons and four
daughters.
The Serra Club of Metropolitan
Atlanta, composed of business
and professional men, has forty-
two members, representing all
the parishes of Greater Atlanta.
The organization is dedicated to
fostering and encouraging voca
tions to the priesthood and sis
terhood.
