COLUMBUS—Why are we here
in Georgia suffering from an
acute shortage of priests? Knights
of Columbus attending a com
munion breakfast, here, were
asked this question by the Rev.
Ralph E. Seikel, assistant pastor
of Holy Family parish.
The talk was occasioned by the
recent plea for vocations voiced
by the Most Rev. Thomas J. Mc
Donough, auxiliary bishop of the
Diocese of Savannah. His Ex
cellency proclaimed. “Our great
est need, our most compelling
need is priests.”
Father Seikel said that it was
his belief that the lack of voca
tions stems from a two fold rea
son, much is unknown about the
life of a priest and that in the
secular surroundings in which we
live we see “no pramatic purpose
in remaining perpetually chaste
for Christ.”
Stressing the role of parents
and family environment in form
ing vocations to the priesthood,
the speaker said that four out of
every five young men in the
seminary stated that, “they were
greatly helped and influenced in
their decision to study for the
priesthood by the solid religious
atmosphere of their homes. Little

things like praying together,
playing together, a spirit of give
and take, an abundant inter
change of love, respect for paren
tal authority and parental respect
for priests and religious—in other
words—the overall example of
good Catholic family life.” He
quoted Father Finn, rector of St.
John’s Seminary, Detroit, who
claims that “ninty-five per cent
of the inspiration for a vocation
comes from the home.”
In discussing the second rea
son for the shortage of priests, the
fact that the pragmatic world in
which we live sees it as a wasted,
life, Father Seikel asked: “How
can anybody call the life of a
priest monotonous or wasteful?”
“Every day is different. The
only thing a priest can count on
is his Mass by which he starts
his day and from which he ob
tains . the strength to carry on.
Is it a waste to be an Instrument
of peace, an instrument of Christ?
Is it a fruitless life to sow love
where there is hate, pardon where
there is injury, faith where there
is doubt and hope where there
is despair? Is it an empty task
to share all sufferings, penetrate
all secrets, heal all wounds for
the sake of Christ? Indeed not!
Rather it is a full life, a life over
flowing with love, peace, and
happiness. It could not be other
wise, for it is the life of Christ.”
