Demand Self Efficiency
In the same measure that your work requires no supervision
are you able to say you are efficient. You must eliminate
waste if you would be thoroughly efficient. If you bank in
your savings account here what others may waste, you will
out-distance them on the road to success.

THE CHRISTIAN SOLDIER.
The war should not be fought with
vengeance. I could aim my gun to
kill in the fight, and sing a 'hymn
while doing so. I could immediately'
kneel and with all the tenderness at
my command relieve the suffering of
the man I had wounded.—Rev. Wil
liam M. Gilbert, of Boston.
I do not wish to 'hurt you,
But (Bang!) I feel I must;
It is a Ghnistian virtue
To lay you in the dust.
You—(Zip! That bullet got you!)
You’ire really better dead.
(I’m sorry that I shot you—
Pray, let me hold your head.)
But do not think I hate you
(Crack! Bang!) because I kill;
Though (Biff) I lacerate you
I bear you no ill-will.
If (Kick! Kick! Kick!) I choke you,
A bandage I will roll;
And, trusting this will croak you,
I’ll pray for (Boom!) your soul.
K. B. -Lewis.
IN THE WRONG KEY.
Marshall phoned home to his wife
that he would be rather later than
usual return ng home that night, as
he had to work overtime.
At breakfast the following morn
ing there was a stony silence, and
Mrs. Marshall ate her breakfast with
out glancing up at her husband.
‘‘Margaret, dear,” he remarked at
last, “there is something the matter
with that clock. It has stopped and
f wound it up last night, too.”
“Oh, no, you didn’t!” snapped Mrs.
Marshall, icily. “What you did wind
up was the music box, and when you
came to bed at three o’clock this
morning it was playing ‘Home Sweet
Home.’ ”
TOO MUCH ARGUMENT.
On the western plains -the sheep
man goes out with several thousand
head and one human companion. The
natural result is that the pair, farced
on one another when they least want
it, form the habit of hating each
other.
An ex-sheepman while in a narra
tive mood one evening was telling
a party of friends of a fellow he once
rode with. “Not a word had passed
between us for more than a week,
and that night When we rolled up in
our blankets he suddenly asked:
“‘Hear that cow beller? :
“ ‘Sounds to me like a bull,’ I re
plied.
“No answer, but the following
morning I noticed him packing up.
“‘Going to leave?’ I questioned.
‘ ‘Yes.’ he replied.
‘“What for?’
“‘Too much argument.’”

THE WAR-GARDENER.
Ah, lady, once ’twas'joy to stroll
Beneath your fragrant bowers;
And how I poured out all m|y soul
In terms of lovely flowers';
I said your eyes were pansy eyes,
Your mouth was like the poppy,
And in your cheek the warmth that
lies
Red roses loved to copy.
But now your garden’s changed in
deed,
Gone all its floral beauty,
You’re planting different kind of seed,
And doing war-time duty.
How can I say your glowing cheek
Is like the reddish radish? . . .
And of your onion breath to speak
Would sound completely caddish.
Can I compare those lips I see
• To very ripe tomatoes?
Or say, sweetheart, you are to me
. More precious than potatoes?
Romantic paths we may not stray
Since beet and squash forbid it,
And so I’m going far away
■ To swat the Hun who did it!

She was a very stout, jolly-looking

to murmur, “‘Made expressly for

“Oh, just what the Kaiser tells them
to think about it.”
NO HOPE.
“Have you ever smoked a ciga
rette?”
“No, sir.”
“Have innuendoes become second-
nature to you?”
“No, sir.”
“Can you give a delicious little
shiver?”
“N-no, sir.”
“Do your lips become tremulous
your soul come to your eyes, when
stirred by the divine passion?”
“I—I am afraid not, sir.”
“And do yon put a' gossamery biv
of lace, faintly scented with a heart
quickening perfume, to your eyes?”
“N-n-no, sir.”
“Then we are both wasting time.
You can not be the heroine of any
modern story.”
