The Peace of Liberty by Fight,
ing or the Peace of
Slavery---Which?
During all the centuries of which
we have any record the world has
never- faced such a tragic crisis as
that which now confronts it.
Egyptian, Assyrian, Babylonian,
Persian, Greek, Macedonian and Ro- -
man empires have risen, flourished
and fallen. As blood and barbarous
interludes we have knowledge of the
ephemeral empires of Tamerlane and
Genghis Khan. The Mohammedan
wave came with tremendous impact
and threatened overwhelming de
struction, but was hurled back by
Charles Martel, the Frank, at Tours
in the year 732 and 950 years later
met a final and decisive defeat at the
hands of John Sobieski, the Pole, in
front of Vienna, in the year 1683.
Progress for a time, reaction for a
time; such has been history— But
after each period of reaction the suc
ceeding period of progress has car
ried the world's peoples farther along
the road toward a real civilization
than the preceding period of progress.
* This Is the closing section of an address
delivered to two different audiences of sol
diers at Camp Gordon by Bernard Suttler,
of Atlanta. Both andiences requested that
this part of-the address be published.
Our Own Time.
In our own day our grandfathers
saw the failure of the meteoric Na
poleon, and after that the world set
tled down to the belief that it had
seen the last of such efforts at world
domination.
We overlooked the Hohenzollerns.
For 700 years this family of Ger
manic origin, of Hunnish beastliness
and cruelty, of Carthaginian treach
ery and duplicity, has pursued a con
sistent policy of building up its pow
er. It has stopped at no fraud, no
lies, no cruelty, no bloodshed, no dis
honesty in it sonward march to pow
er.
Moloch, the bloody god of the Am
monites, into whose fiery embraces
his imbruted worshippers fed their
children, cannot be compared with
the Hohenzollerns, who have devour
ed millions of the children of men,
both of their followers and their op
ponents, that they may have power.
We are told that the name means
the “high toll takers,” an dif ever a
name was deserved this one is, for
of all the bloody-minded murderers
known to men, not one, not even
Tamerlane nor Genghis Khan, have
taken such deadly toll of human life
as this blood-hungry family of Ger
man wehr-wolves known to us as
Hohenzollerns
Because we assumed that these Ho
henzollerns had become civilized and
Christianized nnd so gave them the
same freedo mof action that the rest
of the world claimed for itself, the
world must now endure all things in
the great struggle for Christianity,,
for Democracy, for .Civilization, for
Liberty, for Life and for Property.
The Greatest Tragedy in Human
History.
Why is this the greatest tragedy
of all history? Because more people
are affected by its awful cruelties
and sorrows.
The world today is many times
more populous than in any previous
crisis.. The means of communication
have been so improved that the rela
tions between nations are much
closer than in previous ages.
Practically every nation has men
of its blood dwelling in all other na
tions. International marriages and
blood relationships are common.
Business connections have become so
interlaced that multitudes of men are
interested in business concerns in
other countries than their own.
Though more populous it is in a sense
a smaller world as the arteries of
communication have become the
nerves which have caused men to be
drawn closer together and finally to
begin to believe in the oneness of
humanity.
And because this feeling had grown
and taken strong root in thfe minds
of the. civilized people, they refused
to believe that Germany was planning
deviltry against humanity, notwith
standing that clear-seeing men had
given warning. It -was a rude awak
ening when the blow fell like a light
ning stroke, and the world could
hardly believe it when it developed
that we had to face the carefully pre
pared power of a highly educated
nation of savages more brutal and
coldly cruel than humanity had ever
before known..
After nearly four years of the Ger
man terror there are still some weak-
minded people who believe the Ger
mans to be a sweetly reasonable and
kindly people who have been led
astray by wicked rulers.
The hard fact is that the German
rulers, the Hohenzollerns and the
other upper class beasts with whom
they consort, knew the material
which lay under their hands and have
carefully educated to the nth power
the natural brutality, treachery and
greed inherent in the german nature.
There is not one chance in a mil
lion that the German people will ever
reform themselves or their govern
ment. If reformation ever comes it
will be the result of the shot and
shell of the really civilized peoples
