THE ATLANTIAN
Brothers in Business—An advertise
ment manager was going home one
night in a tramcar. It was late, and
the man who sat next to him began
to talk.
"What business are you in?” he
asked.
“The advertising business.”
“Is that so? I used to be in the ad
vertising business myself. I gave it
up, though, and went into the rag-and
old-bottle business. I was a sandwich
man for a theater for six months.
Say,” and he leaned over confidential
ly, “ain't it hard work when the wind
blows?”—London Tit-Bits.
Rather Skeptical—“Pa, what is an
ethnographic boundary?”
“It’s an imaginary line, my son, that
exists largely in the minds of idealis
tic statesmen, but will never figure to
any great extent in either history or
geography.”
—Birmingham Age-Herald.
A MASCULINE HELEN.
Life suggests a “Handsomest Man
Contest,” naming among the possible
candidates for the prize Charlie
Schwab. Which reminds us that while
a colleague of ours was gazing at
Charlie’s picture the other day we
heard him murmur abstractedly: “Is
this the face that launched a thousand
ships?”—Boston Transcript,
ONE AND INSEPARABLE.
“Sages tell us that the best way to
get the most out of life is to fall in
love with a great problem or a beau
tiful woman.”
“Why not choose the latter and get
both?”—Amherst Lord Jeff.

“I claim that Congressmen, are
paid more than they’re worth.”
“How much are they paid?”
“I don’t know.”

Poor Father’s Monocle—A boy fresh
from school went down to breakfast
and began at once to tell his' mother
about the term and what he had done.
“We’ve just started molecules,” he
said. “Awfully interesting. Jolly hard,
though 1” (
“Ah, yes,” said his mother, “very dif
ficult. Your poor dear father never
could keep his in his eye.”—Pickup.

BUT WHAT ONI
“Our Teachers,” was the subject of
the toast which Mary, a popular
young high school girl, was asked to
give at a class banquet. Being a gen
eral favorite with both pupils and
teachers she was regarded best quali
fied to handle the subject in a pleasing
and tactful manner. Imagine their
surprise when she closed with the
startling peroration: “Here’s to our
dear teachers, long may they live, but
—what on?”

v FROM MISSOURI.
By Betty Earle
We sent a man to Jefferson
To Jefferson, to Jefferson,
We sent to man to Jefferson
To represent the town;
Ho got him twenty other men,
Other men, other men,
He got him twenty other men
And asked their parents down.
He paid them and he made them
And he put them on the map,.
He let them sup the treasury up
Before he took his nap;
And all we ever asked of him
Was better roads—a lot of them,
But all we ever got of him
To drive us from our shacks,
Was just a bigger tax from him,
(And nothing light or lax in
them)
He said we had to have the tax
To'fill the treasury up—
And then the twenty other men,
The son-in-law and brother-
men,
With pagery and stagery
And plenty in their cup,
Sat down before the treasury
The treasury, the treasury,
Sat down before the treasury
And drank the taxes upl
She Called a Floorwalker—“Are
these lace collars good value?”
“Yes, sir,” said the pretty saleslady.
“I wear them myself.”
“How about these silk stockings?”
Utter silence.—Louisville Courier?
APRILIA
I will meet you, Love, in the mystic
garden,
In the secret hour of the lyric night;
I will come with a cry for peace and
pardon
And kneel to you in white.
I see you coming with footsteps stilly,
Leaving a faint fire over the lawn—
Stately and tall as a shining lily
Stirred by the wind of dawn.
Come to me, Queen, and my heart
embolden,
Touch me again with the mystic
rod;
Come to me, woman of wonder,
golden
Out of the heart of God.
Come in the hour when the round
moon whitens
Over the hills and the sacred sea;
Come as the roof the low sky height
ens,
And bring all heaven to mel
—Edwin Markham ;
