SUMMER SCHOOL AT
MIDDLE GA. COLLEGE
MISS BARNUM NEW
MEMBER OF FACULTY
VISITING DAY AT
MIDDLE GA. COLLEGE
The largest summer sohoel ever
held in Middle Georgia will be even
ed at this college during the month
of June and will continue for a full
quarter. The quarter will be divided
into two terms of six weeks each.
The first term will not only carry
full college work and high school
work, but also the State Teachers’
course.
This summer school wilt be pre
pared to meet the following require
ments:
1. Teachers who desire to increase
their scholarship, professionalize
the : r certificate, fthd prepare them
selves for more efficient work.
2. Teachers or others who are
working towards a Junior College
diploma,
3. Students who desire to make Up
deficencieS or who want to do a
term’s college work in advance.
The State will send the faculty for
the courses in education. The full
Junior College faculty will also teach
in the summer school, and the high
school will have well selected teach
ers to aid students,
A student may make 3 college
hours in one term or six in the quar
ter. Classes will be held six days
a week hence the quarter’s work will
be completed in ten weeks.
The six weeks term will cost $22
and the quarter will cost $44. This
includes board, room, fees, etc., but
not books.
The Middle Georgia College is well
equipped for physics, chemistry and
all subjects that will be taught. The
library has been increased to 2100
volumes. The large beautiful swim
ming pools, the basketball court, and
the tennis courts will furnish ample
places for exercise. The radio and
nicture machine will give evening en
joyment to those so inclined. There
is no place in the state where more
can be had under such splendid con
ditions as at this .excellent new Jun
ior College.
The student body was sorry to lose
Miss Katherine Gilliland, our French
and Latin teacher, two weeks ago,
when she left us for a place in the
Atlanta schools, where her mother
is teaching. She has had her appli
cation in for this place since she fin
ished Agnes Scott several years ago.
She left immediately when she found
that she had been elected. Miss Gilli
land, was so friendly that she won
the love of all the students, and we
wish her every success in the coming
years.
We extend the warmest welcome
to Miss Maude Alice Barnum who
comes to us from 'College Park, as
our new teacher. Miss Barnum is a
graduate of Wesleyan College, has
had several years of experience and
‘g very capable of holding the place.
She plays the violin beautifully and
has already become a member of our
orchestra. We hope that she likes
us as well as we like her.
INSPECTORS VISIT
MIDDLE GA. COLLEGE
CONDUCTS FARM
CLASS AT CARY
Dr. D. S. Campbell of the Ameri
can Association of Junior Colleges,
and -Mr. Paul Ellison of the State De
partment of Education visited here
for the purpose of inspecting Middle
Georgia College.
Dr. Campbell of Peabody College
is sent out by M. L. Duggan of the
State Department of Education to
'ake charge of inspecting all Junior
and Senior Colleges in Georgia. The
purpose of the inspections is to pre
vent the work of one college over
lapping the work of another. If
wo or more colleges are giving work
i the same field, and if that work
■an be given in one college more
economically, it is the business of
hese inspectors to see that the par
ticular work is removed from all the
colleges except the one iir-which they
see fit to leave it. Another purpose
of these inspections is to set up a
'andard for Georgia Colleges.
Mr. Browning asked that the tea
chers make Tuesday visiting day at
M. G. C. Each teacher at their va
cant periods visited the various class
rooms and observed. The students
;wore not warned before hand, and
we arc afraid that some of the tea
chers have bad opinions as to how
we prepare our work. Mr. Brown
ing visited one section in Chemistry
and learned that ammonia was a
solid. Mrs. Harris and Miss Lane
visited the sophomore College class
in Education. Mr. Moye called on
several of the students to give talks
on the different problems the teach
er meets within the school room. Of
course having visitors in the class
room made the students feel a little
self-conscious. Pm afraid if we feel
as we did the other day when we go
out to teach, our teaching profession
will be ended the first day once and
for all.
Every student made the vow that
they would prepare their lessons bet
ter every day from now on, and glad
ly welcomed the sound of the four
o’clock bell. The teachers I think
were sorry for they were learning
things that they had never heard be
fore.
