SKA MONSTERS.
Shoal of 0 lm(e*--JJuudee, Oet, J 4.
On Sunday last, a shoal of fisht-s ol
>the kind called Firmer , a species ol
u small whale, was observed in om river.
11 It was seen again-oit Monday morning
by some people on the south coast, and
by them followed into a.fishing coble—
* About eight o clock it was observed by
11 - many from our harbor. The bouts drove
e the shoal before them, to viva rd the cn
trance of the new harbor;an:l after tack
ing about there for a iittie time, if bent
1 its course along the new cast wall. At
T this time the ehase exhibited a scene u
niqueaml beautiful. The sea monsters,
s about 40, and in part seen above water,
ploughed their way majestically «tonj|;

anxious and eager looks, followed close

* this moment the boats dashed in among
tllcm. The landmen rushed into the
. water. Blow followed fa t upon blow.
Harpoons, torch staff's, lances, boat
‘‘ hooks,,spears, adzes, pikes, and pick
-15 axes were raised on hmn, and inllicted
many a gashing wound. Blood spouted
around, and dyed the Uood. Men
bawled— women screamed; the tails of
1 flapped, “And made a tern

*' But though the general effect of the
" .was thus striking, a more minute
examination brought but circumstances
4 irresistibly ludicrous. Here might be
seen a sturdy laborer, grasping in his
arms the fail of one monster, and cqst
about by its lashing, but still clinging to
his prey; there a lusty carpenter, alter a
death-dealing blow, which sunk hi> adze

V creature’s tail; (here, a boat, borne away
upon the shoulders of a monster, was
no uncommon ■sighs; and upon one occa
sion, a sailor lad, byway of securing
his right to the properly of a fish which
■: he had laid hold of, mounted upon its
back, held fast by the fins, and was
borne along in similar style, calling out'
as he went, ‘*l l»«ve got tins chap; 1

Their length was from 12 to 21 feet; and
they would produce from 1 to 5 cwt.
