COUSIN LUCY.
CHAPTER vni.
I-
How many hearts are withered in their prime,
Crushed by the world’s ingratitude alone;
Sent to the grave despairing, ere their time;
Their worth uuralued, and their truth unknown;
An unsus[>ectiiig faith their only crime
How many spirits, sorrowing, have Down
From earth o’erburthened w ith their heavy woes,
The God, who thus ordained it, only knows.
11.
Twas thus with bain. He died as many die.
V ictims of this proud world’s umvorthincss;
Whose hearts have chords w ithin them tuned too
high
To bear deception’s touch: in whose distress,
None, but those like them, can feel sympathy—
-1 know exactly what 1 would express;
P.ut yet good feelings arc not quite so plenty
1 hat 1 can spend them, where not one in twenty
111.
Would understand them—So I will have dune with
Jly sad reflections—lt was not my plan
That my narration should he overrun with
So many of those things when I began
I’ll tfi'e my brains a shaking, and go on with
My tale, to its conclusion, if I can.
\\ ell then; in short, Sam’s doctors give him over,
’Twas a clear case, that he could not recover.
IV.
I sat beside him, through the painful night
On which he died—ln agony he lay
Striving in vain, against the awful might.
Os the destroyer.... Ere the coming day,
That soul must take its long returnless flight,
With the last, lingering throb of life’s decay;
To Join the host ot those; who were, what we,
This moment, are ;—and are,—what we must be.’
V.
(Oh, ’tis a fearful tiling; to look upon
A form which once with health and beamy glowed;
Just when the soul is hastening to be gone,
Forever, from its perishing abode;
When the great veil liangs trembling, half with
drawn
Which from Its vision, shrouds the bar of God;
And to the parting spirit, soon will give
That view which mortals cannot sec, and live )
* * * * * * '*
VI.
The drops of moisture on his brow, appear
tike dew upon the marble—The low sigh
Short and repented, and, the frequent tear,
The film that gathers o’er his freezing eye,
Proclaim the wearied spirit to be near
Its goal; and speak the mortal agony.
A moment; it was dreadful—but ’tis past.
One struggle,—only one—it is the last.
VII.
Here was a heart to captivate and bless
Al! those who knew its virtue and its worth ;
A sou!, whose feelings were all nobleness ;
And rais'd above the grovelling views of earth
