pmr and pleasant, as infirmity and oIJ f would permit. , ames, after carrying his youngest sis r a neighbouring school, had spent early pa"t of the day, in the usual icerns of the plantation; but as the approached the meridian, he felt a the of lassitude, which was followed , hills, and a thrilling in the temples; .rish beat, and irritation ensued; An James returned to the house, and “entered, made the above observa i to bis father. . i bed was prepared for him, in which laid himself, while the affectionate fa r urepared a salutary bolus, to miti e the rage of that fever, Which now eatened the existence of a beloved J ames’ temples were bathed by the j e ,t of all hands, those of his mother; father, sat constantly by his bed-side, tchin" the tumultuous throbiugs of his se and the flushing of his burning ek’s. The house was still, the tread footsteps were scarcely heard, for iely, and affliction were there. As a few hours James, was more compos ite necessary conversation was now ered in whispers, lest it should inter )t that sleep which James had fallen ~L\Vhen he awoke he perspired free and was tranquill: Gratitude, and raised a smile upon the countenances the anxious family, for their beloved W s was better. On the third day, bis rer returned ; it increased, it waned, il left him; for it had now, assumed ■ character of an anticipating tertian. On the fifth day, his fever seized him ain ; it increased, it raged, but alas ! lever waned, but like a staunch murderer, steady to his purpose: Pursued the soul thro’ every lane of life ; fill forc’d at last to the tremendous verge, [t fled from earth to heaven.” His death was a dreadful stroke, to is lovely family ; yet they bore their ief, with becoming fortitude. They ourned indeed, yet they mourned not, those without hope. James, bad been ught to revere the Christian religion; me few sabbaths before his death, James ak the quarto bible, venerable from e, and careful use, and desired hie fa er, to point out to him, some of the ast remarkable passages about Jesus irist, and the doctrine he preached, ae good old man, familiar with his sub :t, by an easy gradation, led the mind his son from the simple, to the more blime truths of the gospel; he pNuted simple, yet glowing colours, the beau nul excellency of the Christian reli m; its complete adaptation to the ru ed state of mankind, and the absolute cessity of “repentance toward God the ither, and faith in our Lord Jesus arise.” The countenance of James lieu ted that be took a deep interest, in e remarks of his father. From this time the bible was the con mi companion of James, in his leisure iuicuts; he read it muct, and it is hop ,it is believed, its ruths were blessed, the salvation of Lis soul. Nothing w remains of James, but the remem ratice of his virtue, his sweet cheer less, his pleasing vivacity, and his fi -1 piety. *#* The Person, who lodg a letter in the office some days ago,ad essed to the subscriber, is respectfully ■cited to call and see me in a few days Mr. Kneelaud’s.
