Mame them for pocketing the cash,
uid sleeping on the hill, if allowed
j 0 do so. But it was the company I
blamed for not finding these officers
enough to do. “ Savannah” says it
is of “ nights only” some ot the of
fers retire to the Sand-Hills, but he
did not say at what time they were
or are at their posts attending to their
d„ty. I said from Bto 9 o'clock in
the morning, (thereby consuming
0 „e fourth part of the whole day
ligl,t) “ for their comfort and health”
and as “ Savannah” does not deny,
it is of course admitted. Had I been
disposed to attack the officers of the'
company, I could have done it most;
effectually, by showing that large
sums of money had been improperly
detained and used, contrary to the
express rules and regulations made
for the company, s government. I did
not however, nor do I, wish to make
personal remarks or allusions, and if
driven to it,“ Savannah” or some'
one like him will be to blame. Lot
it be shown that, some of the officers
were not absent at least one fourth
part of the day from their posts; let
ft be shown that others were not ab
sent from the wharf whole days to
gether, the hands not wandering about
the streets in-mischief and idleness.
Let this be proven, and that the
wharf bell was regularly rung for
convening the hands and again for
their dispersion, and I will agree that
I have been guilty of injustice. But
until this proof is furnished, I stand
ready to show (if required) that such 1
was not the fact.
I have already said what were my
motives when first I wrote on this
subject; I hoped to arouse the com
munity from that supineness with
which (hey suffer an evil; I wished
to force the company to have lighter
boats on this river than they now
have, or allow others to do so. As
a necessity for which, I showed the
difference between the operations of
a light boat and the company’s heavy
ones. In doing which I certainly
did not feel ill will towards any one,
nor intended harm to any individual
whatever. It was with the policy of
a company, with a capital of SBOO,-
000, 1 entered the lists, to ridicule
that grovelling policy which has ta
ken every opportunity of squeezing
from the community even the pitiful
sum of twelve and a half cents at a
time in the h eight of a bale of cotton.
It was an ardent desire to see our
river freely navigated; to see this
shameful monopoly done away, and
industry and enterprise allowed the
use of our water courses. And what
ever an interested writer, like “ Sa
vannah,” may say to the contrary,
such times wdl come; for in these
enlightened days, so sluggish and use
less a monopoly as the Steamboat
Company, acting on the public as it
docs, like the dog in the manger, will
not and ought not to be endured.
With “ Savannah” l am done, un
less again forced before the commu
nity; but to the Legislature I hope
to shew, in the clearest light, the be
neficial consequences that will result
from an abolition of the company’s
ill used monopoly, and thereby in
sure its being destroyed.
