FOR THE CHRONICL^I.
SOMETIME pad, there appeared in the
Cjlunhian Centinef, teveral numbers, under
the fig-, a tare oFa Narrator, alternately, to
the great trouble of the Editor, and his
readers. I really did wonder, that the Edi
tor continued such rh tpfodies, or legendary
t vlea (or as the writer might deem them,
moral) so long They were falfome tome
and the public, mn!l have been pelleted with
them too much. I o.vr .• whenever 1 receiv.
ed a piper containing one of his numbers,
I immediately call it a-,way, as useless paper, .
blotted.
After, this felf-important Narrator, cams
forward in the Herald an eTavift on Jrcfs:
to (how hi a folly also but, how vain for
an individual, cfpeci.illy one that appeared,
f,on hi* productions, so little acquainted
with the higher walks of life, to pretend to
oiya laws, or govern the rage of fafhion ;
or even to change what is called taste in
jifefi ; Hi might as fooa attempt toafeend
the rapid water falls of the Niagara—and
probably with more fucccfs. Fa.hions are
ibmeth'ng arbitrary, and are caught from a
hi ,her soarer, than merely from thi/wlni/j
multitude. Every body, in a land of liber,
fv. ought to dress as he thinlis proper
andiro ms opinion, it is better to follow th«
prevailing model, th-m oppufe ..ae.n. 1 :ay,
tell me how a fellow wouk *ook, at this
day, with the want of his coat, rcicPing
down to his hams, and the ficirts thereof,
not more than four inches long ? I a.a furs
he would make a very ridiculous appear
ancf, and would-be laughed at by every
body who (aw him. Ia n very much ptea
fed with the drclfes of the ladies—l think
they become them—they are light, and (how
their form to advantage fend certainly,
ate more comportablc, being light for tue
fammer, than any heavy clothes.
I have got my hand in, now, and can nut
fr*p. The Southern Planter, and J. R. ar.
red my attention, and appear to me, syno
nymous; whether they ate really so, I can
not pofiihly fay ; but, to ms they appear
congenial in lentuncnt and language too.—
OL Cungrefs Orator, and Southern Planter,
appear to be the fame. Ido not taw up
ray pen t» follow any of them, through ad
jheir vagaries ; tut to give my opinion,
without extracts, or comments.
An era, like the prefenr, where dangers
press on every fide, one falfe step might
plunge us into a gulph of misery; it is there
fore, the duty of our chief msgidratc, to
cultivate peace with all and it it
is po,Ttble, to efcapetlw dire eiFcfts of war,
on honorable terms, to prevent it, by all
means in his power—aided by oar bed Citi
zens, who will rejoice at inch an event.—
Mr. Jefferlon, i believe, in this trying ferns
L has dlfplayed great talents, and moderation ;
and I trail - , will harmonife dtfeord, reftorc
order, and caufc peace to return.
There is nothing difeovers a more depra
ved mind, than envy- and when united
with enthufufm, deilroys the happmels ot
the possessor, and drives him to commit
enormous crimes. Men who fancy tcy
have abilities, without virtue, or any wquu
site to make them great, become dangerous
to government, vainly Lmsginmg t e V
have not been rewarded according to their
rgerit. The people are the bed judges.
perhaps Mr. J. R. may hive ca fl.
boatful eyes up to the Prefiieutial chair—
but, I trn.l the green eyed muter, will ne
-ver preside there. Me*of his principles
arc always obnoxieus to governments in
genera!, and cannot prove thcmfelvcs good
Citizens. They would go any lengths to
anfwcr their sanguinary pnrpcfes ; and would
deluge the world in blood, or plunge a poni
ard in the bolbm of their bad friends, to
anfwcr their diabolical fchetacs, and promote
their own aggrandisement;—Among these
I rank, if not the fame, J. R. and the
lioathsrn Planter. Too well do I know
the seditious principles they cherifc; nor
am 1 a Itranger to the inflammable nonfenfc
that has flowed from the tongue of one,
or frantic madness, from the pen of the other:
I view them both with horror, and I despise
them ; they are only fit for insurgents—and
I believe, if they had the power, would
involve the United States in a cruel and
bloody civil war; yea, delight in feeing
brothers (hed brothers blood. It is my
lincere wifn, that neither J. R. or his friend,
the Southern Planter, should they be candi
dates, obtain any place of honor or profit in
the United States. If they are difpleafcd
with the government that supports them,
let them clear out, and follow the heels of
their good kinsman, John Randolph, who
after doing much injury in, and about Wil
liamfourgb, Virginia, faeaked off with the
much admired Dunmore, to the Bahamas;
whei;, if they Ihould go, it is my prayer,
they may never return again.
’ A PLAIN SPEAKER.
