PROPOSALS,
Ftr fuhlijiitig by fubfcriphon, the htteHs ,f
DR. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN ,
Phtlo/ophical, Political and Literary ,
Hominum rerumque reporter.
THIS edition will be published from the
copies revised and comdkd by Dr. Frank
lin, the coircdiont of which are in tie
hand writing of the author, and may be
fecn by any gentleman in the ptffcffion or
the editor of the Aurora.
The publication of the writings of Dr,
Franklin in a complete edition, was long
contemplated by the late Bettj. Frankly
ilache t his gfandfon, who trani'cribcd the
copy which was devised to Mr. W» Temple
hrankiin, for publication. It was origin*
ally designed to publish that com fled edi
tion in three languages, and in
Germany, France, and America, atih#*
fame tints ; this expectation was freftrated
by the devfee (W. Temple Franklin) nthd
it ia asserted with great apparent probabi
lity, facrificed the work ani the honorable
trail repufed in him, for money, to the
mortal hatred of the Eaglilh miuiftry a.
gfciuft the deccafed sage.
As soon as this faft was known, the
editor of tie Aurora tinted his attention
to the collection of every pa r er and circiim
ftance which could tend to preserve and do
honor to the memory of a man to whom
America particularly owes so much, and
who, as he was among ihc firft who it fle di
ed back iuftte on his native, country, mnft
Continue to be ranked to the latest pefteri
ty, among its greatest benefafton and orna
ments.
Early admiration of Dr. Franklin; edu
cattd in veneration and reverence o! his
clatadler —and other incidental circum
ftsnces not neceflary to be pointed cut,
have concurred to favor the collision of
the hfji materials , that could be obtained,
after the facrificc of the work by the de
vifec.
With forae industry, and with fotne cx
penfe the editor has pcffeffbd hitnfclf, not
only of the copy with the ccneftion# and
addi ions in Dr. Franklin** hand waiting;
bit also of fcveial articles which have never
appeared in any former collation, and of
feme which have never appeared in print.
Proposal* would have appeared long Cnee
in this city, had not an advertisement of an
intended edition, been published in the
Englilh prints; the present editor thought
it might be pdfible that the edition advet
tifed wa» that which Mr, Temple Franklin
was intruded with ; but it now appear*
that the English edition is only a new edi
tion of the former compilation with foroe
fmail addition*; but Hill deficient , cn z
companion with the corredlcd papers in tke
bands of the editor ,
The whole will now be carefully collated,
and the work executed in a style worthy cf
th a great pat natch of American liberty and
aprjile of the American pre/s.
The additional papers will form at leak
a ‘volume, perhaps more—the authentic pa
per* already printed, form ihree-~z ud it is
in'-nded to begin with the feconi volume,
which will be put t 6 prtfs immediately, and
to publish the Biography last ; so that such
additions! particulars a* may throw asy
ufeful light on the life ol this great man,
may be engrafted on the memoir; to ob
tain which and other important materials,
the editor will spare neither pains nor cx
percc.
Gentlemen who may be prlTcfTed cf au
thentic or original papers, or correspon
dence of Dt. F. will render public femes
by cosaraanscadag them to the editor.
