During the last peace the Abbe Gregoire
came over from France to E-glcnd, where
he made a tour through the country, mid,
from his amiable character and excellent
1 qualities, was received in the hrft societies
in a very hospitable manner. On his return
to Paris I alkcd him how he liked England ?
He railed, “ The Engiilh are a generous,
hofpifable, good people ; and the c<. untry
would be charming, had it pleased Got! to
give them fomc funlhine, and French cocks.
The country, (he faidj was always enve

on abominable legs of mutton, road-beef,
heef.flakes, cabbage and potatoes, none of
which were half cocked, and with faucc
seldom eatable ; the poner was bitter, and
the port wine so strong that he could not
. drink it, and as to water he did not like
that beverage." In tad the good Abbe
preferred France, and, being of a humane
difpofitipn, seemed to feel foiry for the many
inconveniences under which, as he fuppefed,
the people of England laboured.

If made, and he informed theifr that he waa
a partner in a certain hoafc in King.ftroet,
' where they were to deliver their cotton,
and receive their pay, <« ft* cie ' He then
left the waggons, and came immediately
to town* and going- to the gentleman whom

house. On receiving the money, Brown
stepped out to the waggoners, and ihewed
it to them, ohferving at the fame time,
that he had not the specie in the store, but,
if they would wait, he would go down to
the bank and bring it to them in dollars.
' Not harbouring the moil distant suspicion of
fraud, the waggoners agreed to wait for
him. But, initcad of going to the bank,
he made off, & hat not since been beared of.
