'FROM ALGIERS- * j>y Hie arrival at this port yestcr . -of the brig Aurelia, capt. Leach, .‘ j 56 days from Algiers, we learo, Ih»t a frigate arrived at that place on the 9th of May from Constantinople, lpresr.it from the grand seignior to (he (ley of Algiers. A few days pre vious, a large polacre of about 400 tons burthen, arrived from the same place, laden with implements of war of every description. The grand , siegnior had highly complimented, pr,d conferred many honours on the ,lcy for his firmness and intrepidity S in the defcuceofthceity against the late ( 'attack of (he British fleet under com- i piand Os lord Exmouth, and the whole j tenor of bis eonduet during the late unhappy state of affairs; he has pre sented him with captain’s dress on the occasion, which is considered the highest-reward of valour. On the 11 th, 13th awl 14th of May, great public rejoicings were manifested in lonsequencc of the honour his highness foe dey had received from the grand (ignior.—Salutes of cannon were (red on those days three Times a day jrdm more than 600 pieces of cannon. On th©“2B(h of May. an Algerine brig and schooner sailed on a cruize, asrainst what power was not known. ’J'hejr navy may now consist of one frigate, two sloops of war, lately ar rived from Constantinople; repairing; one sloop of war on the stocks; build ing; three 18 gun brigs, and one IS gun sehr. at sea. ; On the 29(h »»rM ay, a Tuscan am* bassador arrived at Algiers, for the purpose of negotiatinga treaty between that dukedom and the regency of Ah giers. The American consul left Algiers on the 10th of May in the frigate IJ. It is said that Mr. Gallatin is desi rous of returning to the Un'ned States; and the probability is suggested of Mr. Pit.kney’s being transferred to Paris, It is believed that Mr. Rush will succeed Mr Adams at the court of St. James— Ih. * Potsdam, n. y July IS.— lt is bri de-stood that Mr. EJlicot. after a course of observance, rendered un commonly laborious from the unfa vorable state of the weather, has es tablished the latitude of 46" and marked the same, from (he St Law fen- eto St Regis river. No perma nent monuments having been made when ibis -boundary was- first esta blished, the difference is no« exactly known, but it is bflieved it does not yary 50 fe t from the calculation of IWr. Holland, the engineer employed on that occasion. It is hoped that those points, as well as the line gene rally, will be better designated than heretofore; at least that the oftsets of from io to 20 chains existing in the \ former line, will be so la» connected that it may he known which is the true boundary. The commissioners «Mhe part of the British government appearing not fully prepared to en tw upon the negotiation, oursi in the mean time, is industriously engaged ■ In directing a tHgonometideal sui vey of the shores and islands, and taking the soundings of the St. Lawrence. — I>is work, if completed in the man ner it appears to be commenced, will be a valuable acquisition to trie topo graphical knowledge of this pail oi the country. His remedy is easy and certain; he can here lit out a vessel that will soon pay him amply for ail his losses, and I cannot believe him capable of setting down longer submissive to Spanish perfidy. I really believe that (he minister is favorable to the revolution—lie certainly has done much to promote it, (hath, by not doing any thing nr settling any thing with the American government.
