AWARE, that my new and difficult era

ence, it is with diffidence I announce my
self aq being about to undertake, (in addi
tion to other engagements) the arduous
task of superintending the Editorial de
partment of a paper I, however tnis

Alabama with a Journal, not entirely unin
teresting to them, while my exertions in
procuring facts in relation to that State
and other subjects, aided by some literary
I friends, will render it hat altogether un

4 depart from the general custom of giving
laborious details of the advantages result
ing from Jt'tnotp'tper publication*, and of
making specious promises; the one being
already sufficiently understood, and the
‘ other calculated to deceive, I offer neitb

It may not be amiss to give to those un
acquainted, a short sketch of the place
whence the paper is to be issued.

Company in Georgia, and the latier by A.
Dexter, *sq. botti having been incorpora
ted into one towu by the last legislature}
is situate inthe healthy, fertile, and thickly
settled county, of the .same name, of which
’ it I* the scat Os justice—intended tfi per-;
. petuate two distinguished martyrs* to the
, cause of the republic, directly opposite
the eastern point of that highly cultivated,
. extensive, and fertile tract of land, known
by the name of the ** Big Bend.** It ad
joins the fraction on which the town of
Alabama stands, and bordering on the'
’ celebrated riverof tint name, to which it
. it is navigable at all seasons from the Gull
. of Mexico, for steam boats of a large cists
—distant about two hundred miles from
Miliedgeville; a similar distance from the
sea ports of Mobile and Blakely; about 5i
-above Cafaauba, the seat of government
and about 12 miles below the junction of
the Coota and Taiapoota. It Is the poh
at which the Atlantic mails reach thei
first stopping plaSe'in the state, and from
. whence .Vm may be distributed through
■he country with great facilities. Mont
gomery, from its high and airy situation,
he purity bf its waters, flowing from ilk
-everal springs, and the elevation of the
banka along the river on both sides, which
xciude stagnant waters, is considered pe
culiarly healthy; indeed, many resort to
