her as young, beautiful, and accomplished;
and the counsel for the defendant urged

founded upon a most arrant fiction of the
law-, that the wife was under the control of
her husband. However, all did not avail
the defendant, and the beautiful Miss re
covered a verdict of FIF TEEN HUN

IN the Chronicle ol the 29th ultimo, I

I am, requires that I should declare Mr.
(fanes’ statement, Using a milder term
than it deserves, to be f.ruoveoi.s —The
foundations upon which P II Carnes pre
tends to predicate his claim, are these—
(lie first following of which lie has more
than once affirmed in my prefence —that
by a resent survey .if his tract of land, he
sats he finds a small d- ficiency, a ilium I
reflecting upon the natural cause which
might have produced this diminution in
quantity, (namely, the nearer approach of
• tie bed of the river to the Georgia shore,)
and secondly, the rumor which has for
some time prevailed, (hat the present pro
prietors of LolNo 12, from their apparent
neglect of it, were supposed not \* he in
possession of good and sufficient titles —
and thereby, from tile circumstance of the
lot being situated contiguous to his tram,
connected with the t\to foregoing reasons,
constitute Ills whole claim to it: Common
report affirms P II Carnes to be a ready
in possession of a greater number of acres
than his plat calls fur, without touching
the Lot No 12
Judgment was obtained in the Federal
Court in 1816, against M«j George AVal
ton, and possession of said Lot No 12, giv
en to the proprietors by the Federal Mar
shal in Ap r 1 last—This Lot is of course,
still, as heretofore, offered for sale—Gen
eral warranty titles will be given to the
purchaser; and if contested by P It Carnes,
who has not the. shadow of a title, he will
be firmly opposed by those who know
how to estimate as well as defend their
rights
