"AUGUSTA."
MONDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1821.
“ What •will Mother Grundy *ayto this
We are nfonned by a gentleman, di
rect from Columbia, S. C. that a caucus
was held on Wednesday last, for the
purpose of nominating a Candidate for the
Fresidency. The notification was express
ed in such.general terms, and the object
so little understood, that only 60 of Hie
members of the Legislature met; and
from these Mr. Lowndes received a majo
rlty of votes The next day, however,
another portion of thorn assembled, as the
friends of Mr. Calhoun, and protested
against the order and proceedings of the
meeting.
We do not know that we can better ex
press our opinion of this extraordinary
event, than by adopting the language of
the Charleston Courier of the 15th of Oc
tober last, (with some trifling alterations)
when speaking of Hie causes of, incite
ment to, and dependencies on the elcc
*ion of a Governor of Georgia.
“ Training fur the Presidency. —The
members of the Legislature of South Caro
lina, taking ‘ lime by the forelock,’ are try
ing Mr, Lowndes and Mr. Calhoun, in ad"
vance on the politcal turf of that State*
for the great contest whicli is to take
place two or three years hence. Seeing
!iow distant is the result, and how com
parstively unknown arc the competitors,
it is rather singular that so much interest
should be excited at this early period.—
And yet this question will in all probabil
ity be made to bear upon and control an
other issue with which at first sight it
would seem to be almost wholly uncon
r.ected. As the members of the Legisla
ture are divided into an Upper Country
and Low Country party, all the State elec
tions of South Carolina must depend on
the candidates’ being friendly or inimical
to Mr. Lowndes or Mr. Calhoun in the con
tempiated struggle for,file Presidency. —
So that their friends arc thus testing their
popularity incidentally with a view, it is
presumed, to ulterior movements. Now
it costs a candidate for the Legislature
nothing to pledge himself at this lime to
any candidate for the presidency, because
the legislature will be out before the elec
tion takvs p ace On the other hand, Mr.
Calhoun and Mr Lowndes can gain nothing
from such a pledge, while by seeking and
not obtaining it, one or both must suffer
acUfcat ; and that too on the theatre of
their early ascendency ”
Wo understand, that Alexander Mc-
Kenzie, John Cashin, and Joseph Hutch'
inson, IFq’rs were on the 18'h inst. ap
pointed Directors of the Bank of Augus
ta, on tba pait of the State.
Extract of a letter from a member of Cor.
gross, to the Editor, dated
“ Washington City. Dec 10 ih, 1821.
•» Sir—l'he seven days of this session of
Congics which are paused, have been
chiefly occupied in organizing the two
branches. The usual committees are
appointed and many references of local
matter made to them. A long session is
anticipated by many members—They say
that so much time was exhausted on the
Missouri question, as that it precluded the
possibility of legislating on very many
subjects of much importance, .which must
now be considered ; add to this, the ne
cessity i f making an early disposition of
of the Provinces of Florida; the collision
of feeling, and confliction of opinion that
may possibly grow' out of the attempt to
organize a government for those provin
ces ; with the difficulty that probably will
attend the apportionment of representa
tion from the several States in Congress,
and we have come reison to fear that the
rcsu.l will justify such anticipation.”
Some idea of the mass of matter bo.
fore C ogress may be formed from the
numb ■ of petitions which are often pre
i-cr.trd a d referred in one day. Yester
iav, forty fvc were recelv u in the House
■f’Kepr-Ventatives, on tacit of which a
report must I e mad by some on ?of the
committees Not a few of these art intri
