The great facilities afforded by brokers in commercial operations generally, render it remarkable that the qicrchants ofAu gusta and the planters have long sustain ed the inconvenience of having none, and particularly a Cotton Broker. In almost every other cotton mart the business is principally done by brokers ; and hence the ease, certainty and dispatch with which it is executed. The same systen is perfectly practicable here. The mer chant, by applying at the office of the sub scriber, may hereafter save himself the trouble of sampling his cotton and looking up a purchaser ; —the planter need be no longer involved in doubt and difficulty to ascertain the true state of the market, nor subject himself to fcho caprice of the wary speculator—and the purchaser will at all times know where to resort for cot ton at the market price. Jr L Bookstore, and ready for delivery to Subscriber*. June 3 336 - - - The subscriber respectfully submits to the public the following PROPOSALS, For publishing at Athens, in the Slate of Georgia, anew weekly paper, to be entitled the Atheneum . IN a community of Freemen, and where a disposition to patronize Literature and Science is extensively manifested, the importance of a well conducted Newspaper, must, of necessity, he ge nerally understood ; and among a read t “ig people, such a paper can hardly , fail of being acceptable. That the Athcneum will be a paper of this des cription, it might perhaps be deemed presumptuous to assert; but so far as the efforts ot the Editor can render it useful— ( so lar as persevering industry and atten tion can insure success to his underta king—so tar, at least, the subscriber cart ! pi dge himself, that lie will endeavor to render his paper worthy the attention of its supporters. 1 lie growing importance of Athens, where the flourishing University of the | State is located, and surrounded, as it is, | by an intelligent and wealthy neighbor -1 hood, has induced a belief that no place ; in ths ppper country presented a more inviting opening for the establilbing a new weekly paper,—and the infiuei#e of this opinion has led to the present propo sals, and the subscriber flatters himself, that, in the liberal patronage of an en lightened community, his undertaking will receive an approving sanction. And • | while his own exertions will be persever ingly employed to furnish a paper which shall he useful to his supporters, he will , venture to hope that his columns may he diversified by tha occasional communi cations of such scientific and literary friends as may be disposed, through this medium, to aid him, and benefit the cora mnnily. To make his paper useful, will be the proprietor’s principal aim; and in the furtherance of this object, he will endea vor to give the earliest Foreign and Do mestic Intelligence, with such portions of Congressional matter, w hen the Na tional Legislature are in session, as bis limits will allow, —together with such original or selected Political C.unmuni cations, or Moral Essays, as have the public good in view, aud are free from personalties; but to articles intended merely to gratify revengeful feelings, and to provoke or continue personal con tests, no place will be given. And though in judging of these the editor may occa sionally err, it is to be hoped that no im proper motives may be supposed to in fluence bis decision, inasmuch as (he right Os rejec ting, as well as of inserting communications, must be reserved to himself. As an editor, it will be his interest—as it will be, under all circumstances, his i oliniiti'... •of.ivß general sauKlactlCVtl. From the line of impartial duty, he will endeavor not to depart; and none shall have cam e to accuse him of voluntarily giving a needless offence to a single indi vidual. It will scarcely be necessary to say, that the political complexion of the Alhe ucutn will be Republican. In this age of light and knowledge, and in this coun try, none other ought to ask, or could he expected to receive, public patronage. CONDITIONS , The Athcneum will be published once a week, on a super-royal sheet, and de livered to subscribers, or forwarded hy mail, at Three Dollars a year, payable in advance, or Four Dollars, if payment is deferred to the end of the year. All subscriptions will be for one year at least, and till a discontinuance is di rected. No paper discontinued, except as the option of the editor, until all dues are paid. Advertisements will be inserted at the usual rates.
