editor has the right toeugnire of a subscriber the
cause ot a withdrawal of his subscription,to corn,
plain o' him for it, would be to attach to others, t e
blame, winch, in nine eases out often, is dee on
ly to ourselves. If a man does not consider it
I his interest to continue his subscription longer,
! whether right or wrong in his opinion, ho is just
ns free to do so, as to withdraw his patronage
font any Store—.and to enquire of him 11 ic cause,
is impertinent, while to blame him for it, is arro
gant and unjust. Tim patronage of a paper
should always he given, or withdrawn, f.om a
sens * of the value of die paper to the public, or
to ones-seif, without any reference whatever to
the editor personally, whom one may like or dis
like, without liking or disliking his paper—and
j tile relure an editor should never consider tho
withdrawal of suhsciiption,as personal matter
in the least, nr fuel the less respect or regard for
: the individual who withdraws it. Its only effect
j should ha to prompt him to an examination of
.his conduct, and the correction of any errors
he may discover, and to stimulate him to j
'greater exertions—determined, at least, neither j
to deserve tfensttre, or loss of patronage, so far as 1
his honest efforts can avail to prevent it. As to;
| die withdrawal of patronage for a difference of |
political or religious opinion, that is a thing j
j which should never pain, or move for a moment
any honest and independent editor, as, amid the
•endless Variety of human opinion on thoase sub
jects, the same expression of opinion which
would induce one man to withdraw, would in
duce another or more to subscribe—at least, so
' we have found it.
Comment'd patronage, however, has little or!
nothing to do with personal controversy or eon- j
lliot of opinion; hut is founded, principally, on in |
Jnstry, energy, honesty, and perseverance, in .
the quick publication of all important facts, and
I r.blu tint! intelligent eonnnents npoti them, cal-1
eulated to dovelope their true nature mid coneo-1
quotices. And, commercial men, undivided and
unprejudiced by party, will,as all others ought to
do, always carefully examine both sides of every j
question, looking more to tho inttinsic value of
the opinions & arguments themselves, than to the
persons who utter them. However, then, wo
may differ from any of our merchants politically,
while wo shall continue freely lo express our po
litical opinions, uninfluenced by any man or airy
party, we have no doubt they will patronize us, j
so hug as we may make it to their interest to do j
so, commercially; and the Daily paper will bo
devoted chiefly to their interests. And they can
not be unaware, that no paper can honestly a
;*>oe with them altogether, an ! that while they j
