Chicago, Oct 12, 1869. |
Messrs, Ltwshc tt H&ynao, Atlanta, Go.:
Tour letter of Ootober 6th, to Mr. P. a
Bartlett, General Traveling Agent of this Com
pany, wherein you mention thatoertein etute-
ments have been made in your city, detrimen
tal to the character of the Elgin Watohea, for
Finish and Durability, has b?e& referred to me,
and I desire to note briefly in reply as follows
First, as regards the finish of our movements.
Upon this point your own opinion, with the
published testimonials of the most praotioal
and experienced watch-makers in the oouotry,
and the medals aud diplomas that have been
awarded to them for “perfeot construction
•nd fine finish M at eight different Stats Fairs,
within the peet two years, should be ooncln-
«ivo to your customers. Beoond, as regards
Durability. The only possible criticism upon
this point is “that the watohea have been but
a short time in market, and although without
doubt they could not bare gained the reputa
tion they have, without being more than ordi
narily correct time keepers, and of handsome
appearance, it cannot bo hnown whether they
will last”
In reply to this, I have to sey: First—That
the watches sold by ns two and a half years
ego are in as good condition to-day, where
they have had proper usage, as upon the day
of their purchase. Second—That the use oi
maokinery in the construction of our move
ments, and that of a superior kind, enables
us to use a harder metal for pinions and
wheels than oan be found in other watches
not oonstruoted infs similar manner, and se
cures less friction in the watch train by the
greater exactness and uniformity of machine
over hand labor, and we know, and every
mechanic knows, that watches made upon our
American principle are superior to, and will
outlast twioe over all others.
Third—To settle this point definitely, you
are authorised to say to your customers that
if any watch bearing our trade-mark shall,
with proper usage, within ten years from
date of purchase, wear out, so as to become
useless to the owner, we will give a new
movement of the same grade therefor.
Hoping this will meet all objections aud
enable you to add to tbo large sales you have
already made of Elgin Watches, I am yours
truly, T. M. Avert,
Prest. National Watch Co.
