The appointment ol Austin Hemy Layard

foaallixod politic!** of
New York City, recently made a speech be
fore a “Democratic” meeting iff that oity in
which he is reported to havo said that,
Admtwjrirstiwi of Oe*. Groat has disgraced
at in the eyes of Urn world;” that “U has been
guilty of perfidy and corruption uopaieilel
ed in history;” that “we have the humiliating
apeotacU of s President forced to deuy in pub-
lie prints the charge of oonapiraoy with dis
honest men to destroy the financial credit of
the oountry,” and that “we Aud his trosted
agents using their positions to aggrandize
themselves at tho expoase of the people.”
These charge* in the mouth of a man who
has led a long aud somewhat eventful life,
every period of which has born marked by
the moet shameless ingenuity -political, ■*»'
oial and moral- «nd whoso very soul is satu
rated in the lower depths of obarlaUuUm,
fraud, deception, duplicity and political in
famy, is a fitting tribute to the integrity
patriotism of a Chief Magistrate whoso
lives are above suspioion, and wlio&ft life uiul
publio srrvioes command the admiration
of all honest aud patriotic men. They find
an eoho only among tho more reckless and
abandoned of such villains as havo managed
to eseape the just retributions of the law; and
a place only in such vile abeeta na the New
York Sun, whose editor is perhaps na venal,
and unprincipled os Wood; but who, uulike
Wood, combines some claims to talent, witb
the Moral sense of a malefactor!
Who is this Fernando Wood that thus as
sails the personal character of tho rieaideut?
Who is thi* Chas. A. Dana, who thus lends
himself to the lowest species of prostitution,
iu order that he may be avenged upon the
President for not giving him an office ?
Fernando Wood! Why, the very name is
suggestive of the most diabolical politioal cor
ruption! Has there been a dubious, not to
say, infamous plot in New York politics, dar
ing the last fifteen years, with which tbe name
of Wood has not been associated? Has there
been, within that period of time, a success
ful gambling hell or bagnio, ri
tion witb the local elections, in which Wood
bos not been either covertly or shamofully
connected? Has there been a fraudulent elec
tion, au open and shameless violation of the
naturalization laws, a corrupt whisky ring, a
conspiracy to rob the oity TrcAsnry, an offi
cial malfeasance, or an open aud notorious
effort to perpetrate a gigantic official fraud,
wherein tho name ot Wood did not figure con
spicuously?
Fernando Wood! The name is politically,
morally and socially infamous. It is a stink
and a nuisance iu the nostrils of the decent
ond respectable men of his own party,
suggests smuggling through a Southern port
(daring the late war) in defiance of the laws
of both Governments. It suggests complicity
with political bummers and with sundry thiev
ish cotton trunsaotions, iu another Southern
port, since tho war! It suggests collusion with
faithless Commissaries and Quartermasteis
who escaped the retribution of an outraged
law, only to stand condemned before the bar
of an outraged public sentiment! Why, an
hyperbole for meanness would be an ellipsis
for Wood; it beggars language for even ap
proximate description!
And who is Wood's o bo, Charles A. Dana?
This man, (mankind we beg pardon), this
veiiomous reptile (little animals forgive the
salt), this apostate Republican, this prostitu
ted journalist, was once raised by fortune
(kind to him, cruel to the sensibilities of hon
est men) to a position higher than ho wac
born to; to a position wholly disproportion-
ate cither to his merits or bis ability. Loos
ing this, he wont West and tried journalism,
where, after squandering the substance of those
wno confided in him, he made a disastrous
failure. He then applied for office under Andy
Johnson—-aye, he applied for tbe position of
Collector long after Johnson’s defection, and
when His Accidency had already grown infa
mous as tbo traitor to the party which bad
made him—he did all this under solemn pro
testation of adhesion to “My Policy! " Fail
ing of the covstcd appointment, he sets to and
abases Mr. Johnson like a veritablo fish wo
man (just as ho now abases Gen. Grant, under
similar provocation); and, under the impres
sion that he was still a Republican; and under
hypocritical professions of friendship for Gen.
Grant, some of the friends of tho presuit ad
ministration aided him m the purchase of tbe
very newspaper throngh which he now plays
second fiddle to the Whisky Ring “ Democra-
and abases the President in tornis befit
ting the unalloyed blackguard that ho is !
Booh are the men who, in the face of all tho
facts to the contrury, tuko occasion to traduce
tbe (wraonul aud official character of the Presi
dent ! These are the miserable political soul-
lious and hell-hounds who would poison the
minds of tic public, and inflame tho lowest
passions of u New York mob against tho Chief
Magistrate of the uation l These are the self-
righteous Pharisees—the champions of tho
Bowery snd the Gutter, the self-constituted re
formers—who cry, “stop thief” at honest
men in order to divert attention from their own
sphere of peculation, collusion, hluak mail,
and political infamy 1
