Office of National Watch Co., ) 159 A 161, Lake Utbut, / Chicago, Oct 12. 1869. ( Messrs. Luoshs it Haynes, Atlanta, Ga.: Your letter of Ootober 6th, to Mr. P. 8. Bartlett, General Traveling Agent of this Com pany, wherein you mention that certain state ments have been made in your city, detrimffn tal to the oharaoter of the Elgin Watches, for Finish and Durability, has been referred to me, and I desire to note briefly in reply as follows: First, as regards the flnish of onr movements. Upon this point your own opinion, with the published testimonials of the most, practical and experienced watch-makers in the oonntty, and the medals and diplomas that have been awarded to them for "perfect construction and fine finish n at sight diffsrent Stats Fairs, within the past t.wo years, shoald be conclu sive to your customers. Second, as regards QarabUity. The only possible critioism upon this point is "that ths watches have been but a short time in market, and although without donbt they oould not have gained the reputa tion they have, without being mors than ordi narily correct time keepers, and of handsome appeeranoe, it oannot be known whether they will last." In reply to this, I have to say: First—That the watches sold by us two and a half years sfio are in as good condition to-day, where they have had proper usage, as upon the day of their purchase. Second—That the use of machinery in the construction of our move ments, and that of a superior kind, enables us to use a harder metel for pinions and wheels than can be found in other wetohes not constructed in|n similar manner, ' ad se cures less friotipn in the watch train by the greater exactness and uniformity of mnehine over hand labor, and we know, end every meohanio knows, that watches made upon our Amfiricgur principle are superior to, sibd Will outlast twice over ah others. Third—To settle this point definitely, you fire authorized to say to your customers that if any watch bearing onr trade-mark shall, with j roper usage, within ten years from PLEASE READ THE NAME8 ATTACHED TO THIS TESTIMONIAL i\—Elton- ie published illetiu, will doubt, be a alj parts of Uud horses svery kuight id appear in [scoured for Tor the con- luderolgned, are using Uie "MUTUAL FRIEND' I Stove Work*,” of New York, and baliaringtttobat •mi to all who doafro to yurchaaeu firzi 6MM oittolo QEN.
