Chablottxvzlls, Va., Dec. 16.—Dr. Oliver,
an Englishman of prominenoe, wm shot and
killed at 7 o'clock this morning, by Georgs
C. Ayres, of Faoqnter, who obaraed him with
having acduoed his daughter while visiting his
house some months ago. Ayres arrived ia
town yesterday evening, but found Dr. Oliver
oot of town. This morning be went to his
bouse and called him out of his bed. Dr.
Oliver advanced to shake hands, when Ayers
commenced firing, pursuing him baok into
his bed room and killing him wi'k
three pistol shots. Ayers is a highly
respectable planter of Fauquier, aad a promi
nent member of the Baptist church. Dr.
Oliver wm well known in Virginia as an agent
ot an English Immigration Company, and
had bronght a lares number of Beptofa
Immigrants to Virginia, fls delivered public
addresses on the subject of immigration at
tbe late fair. He wm last from Birmingham,
England. He wm about 40 years of age, and

rifle patented by him took a premium at the
