errooeouo idea generally prevails at the North
that tbe new confederacy, in preparing for
military defence, wil! experience some ditlieu
ty in procuring a supply of artillery stores and
munitions of war. For the information of
that class to whom wa refer we say that tbe
Auderson iroe works, n«ar Jiiobuiotid, Virgin
ia, are worlting their furnaces night and day
oaating Uablgren guns and eolumbiads cf the
heaviest calibre and exquisite fioisb. Several
of these guos and Avo teu inch mortars have
already boon forwarded to Charleston, and
before this pro in battery ready to participate
in ihe bombardmeut of Fort e unipier. The
Tredegar iron wotks, near Richmond, are al
so busily employed iu costing hollow shot and
shell. Several tons have already been for
warded to Charleston. Tbo mftebine shop of
the Atlantlo and North Carolina Railroad,
near Newbern, N. C-, has been trsnsformed
into a military arsenal, where several hundred
hands are now employed in altering muskets
and casting shot aud shell. The alterations
of the old style musket to tbe Minnie style,
compared with a similar alteration made in
tbia State, give the superiority to the former
in eeery respect. The samples of shot recently
exhibited included a s xty four pounder and a
six-pounder, and forty pound shells. Tbe
oastiog was faultless. Tbe railroad compnoy
have offered to contract with ibe Confederated
States for an indefinite supply of both guns
and misailea, guaranteeing to do the work
equal to any done at the North and at a less
price. There ie a foundry near Petersburg,
Virginia, also engaged in oastitig mortars aud
cannon for Cbarleetoo. Only a day or two
ego a mortar from ibis foundry, weighing
5,760 pounds, was placed iu battery near Fort
Sumter. As for powder, both Norik Carolina
and Virginia have numerous mills fur the
manufacture of ihis explosive agent, and al
ready sent 800,000 pounds, per contract, to
South Carolina. After this statement of facta
who will doubt tbe ability of the South to pro
vide itself with munitions of wer ?—JVe>v York
Herald.
The Position of Missouri.
Tbs St. Louis “Kepublicen,” ceutioning
tbe North not to misinterpret the meaning of
Ihe conservative triumph in that Stale, says :
"Eighty out of tbe oinety-'nine delegates will
stand upon tbe platform adopted by the Con
stitaiional Union Convention in St. Louis, end
they ere men who have tbe intelligence, tbe
patriotism, and backbone to do what is right,
uo matter who stands al the door. They are
for tbe Union ut tbe Uoion, but at the same
time they ere for aesertieg the rights of tbe
slave Slates, and for demanding a full and fair
adjustment of all the matters at issue between
them end the fires States, now, when It is pro
posed by Virginia aad Kentucky, Tennessee
and Maryland, to settle them. They are firm
ly end unalterably opposed to the uee of mili
tary force to coerce Mississippi, or Louisiana,
or any of the seceding States, beck into the
Union. We htxard little in seying that Ihe
Convention will not be in session forty-eight
boors before it declares itself opposed Ie any
attempt to bring beck tbe seceding States by
military foroe, and oa this point they will
•stand firm,’ seen though Congress should
clotho Mr. Lincolo with full power to cover
the revolting States with troops. Miaaouti ia
net going to do anything hastily, but she will
do her duty at all hazards and without con
suiting her enemies. Of this el parties, at
home end abreed, may he assured ”
