The alleged power to charm down insanity, or ferooity in beasts, in a power be* hind the eye. It must l>e a ticlory achieved in the will, before it on a be signed in the eye. M Tun Wondsbs or tbi Wicboscom.—We understand it is through the agency of this marvel viewing instrument that Dr. Ayer has at length succeeded in finding thepallndal Miasm and determining its character. Of its effects ws in this section have abundant evidence in the Fever and Ague which it alone produces when absorbed through the lungs into the blood. It has long been held to a be vapor of •emethlog in the vspor of water from decay* ed and decaying vegetation. Under a great magnifying power, the doctor has found this vapor to contain distinct organisms or living bodies, corresponding precisely with thoao found in the blood of ague subjects. They are 13,000 times less than visible to the naked eye, but bare distinct character and form. He ibiato they are reproduetive in decaying mat ter or in the blood, and hence tbeir long con tinued life or the remote of them in the sys tem. lie maintains mat they resemble in character the other fermentative poisons, or such as the virus of rabies or of a dead body, &c., all of which are known to reproduoe themselves with great rapidity like yeast in meisteued flour, ao that the slightest quantity impregnates the whole mass. Yeast, through a powerful magnifier Is seen to be a forest of vegetation which grows blossoms, and goes to seed in a short time. Miasm is not so dis tinctly vegetable, but bas more the appearance of animal life, although Its motions cannot be perfectly distinguished. What the doctor elaitne to have settled is that it is an organic substance and he has further found and em bodied in his “Ague Cure” what will destroy it.—Leader, St. Louie, Mo. Makikq a Livixo.—“ Sonny, where is your father ?” “ Pather’s dead, sir.” “Have you any mother?” “Yes, I had one, but nb®’s got married to Joe Danklin, and don't be my mother any more ; ’cause she says she’s got enough to do to ’lead to his own young ’uns.” '‘Smart boy; here’s a dimo for you.” “That’s ye, sir: it's the way I git my livin’.” “How ?” “ Why, by Idlin' big yarns to green ’uns like you, at a dims a pop.” Kitchkn Odors.—A skillful housekeeper informs us that the unpleasant odors arising from boiling ham, cabbages, sic., is oomplste if corrected by throwing whole red peppers into the pot—at the came lime that the flavor of the food is improved. We have heard that pieces of charcoal will produce the same ef- feet, but we have never seen it tried. 4^“Will You Mabry Mb?”—On 8undny last was an occurrence in one of our churches hardly suited for the occasion. After service, a young man who carries' the collecting plats, as usual put bis hand ia his vest pocket to place upon It a piece of money before starting to collect. He dropped, as he supposed, a quarter on the plate. Bid, without looking at it, PfShed around among ths congregation.— Instead of diver, however, he hadlnadvertent- ly plaoed a conversation losenge in the centre of the plate, and all were aetouiehed, at see* iug the losenge with the words staring them in the face, “Will you Marry Me ?” The young ladies probably thought this was an unusual mode of “proposing !” but no doubt it was the sight of them wbioh caused the mistake — Stales $ Union.
