On. »o» Ilr.LioATB Machinery.—The oil fir diminishing friction in delicate machines ought to be oou»pletely deprived of every kind of aoid and mucilage, and to be capable of enduring a very intense degree of cold with out freezing. Chevreuil’* process consists in treating tbe oil in a mattrass with seven or eigut times its weight of alcohol till boiling. The liquid ie then to be decanted and expos ed to the cDid ; the sienna will tben separate from it in the form of a crystalixed precipitate. The alcohol solution is afterwards to be eva porated to a fifth part of its volume, and tbe clsine will then be obtained, which ought to be colorless, insipidt without smell, and inca ble of absriDg the color ot infusion of lit tnur or turnsale, and having the consistency of pure while olive oil. Shost IIaie rok laoir.s.—Several North ern ladies have been advocating, through Go- dey’s Book, the adoption of the fashion of short hair for ladies. We are sure no South ern lady will allow her kead to be shorn, of •• the glory ” of “ its fair length." .Now, hear what Su Pual says about the matter in 1 Corinthians, chapter x, verse 14 -15: *• Doth not even nature itself teach you that, if a man have long hair, il is a shame to him. But, if a woman have long hair, it is a glo ry to her; for the hair Is given her for a cover ing.” WHITS GRANITE & COMMON CROCKERY. to which we invite the attention of COUNTRY MERCHANTS.
