lion. John Bell arrived at home yesterday
morning. During his recent visit to Washing
ton he has been subjected to the inquisi'iun
which is established in that city by the repor
ts™ for tha telegraph, aud the innumerable
horde of uewsuaoDgers and quidnuncs who
there “do congregate." While no one who
knows him, aud was aware of the pure and
patriotic motive which induced him to leave the
quiet of his home, and mingle among the herd
which customarily swarms in the Federal cap
ital at such seasons, for a moment believed
the miserable canards which were circulated
concerning him, there are many who may
have been misled, while others have propaga
ted them to promote their own purposes. \Ve
deem ii proper to correct them.
Mr. Bell did not desire, and was not offered
a seat in Presiden’t Lincolns cabinet. He
gave utterance to no such sentiments as were
recently attribuied to him b> the tele
graph touching the tone aLd purport of ibe
luaugural, and of the duty of Tenneessee and
the Southern Border States in consequence
thereof. He docs not regard that paper ns
indicating a coercive policy towards the seced
ed Stales. He does not advise a preparation
lor hostile conflict with the Government on
the part of the non-seceded States.
The ^general motive of his visit was one
which every good citizen and patriot will ap
plaud. His object whs to promote a com
promise of pending difliculiies, sod to avert
the horrors of civil war by urging a pacific
and temperate policy on the part ot those
who were about to assumo control of the Gov
ernment. No venal, selfish, sectional or par-
titan idea operated upon him. Alwajs na
tional, coDscrvalive and patriotic, as his wbolo
public Hie attests, ho felt it to be his duty to
interpose by his pnscuce and counsels at this
the great emergency of the nation. We be
lieve that he has done good Men like he
can avail with serenity aud composure (he re

reports which have been sent forth, but we
