John Raleigh > who«o»mi(Ud the 14th lost., it Mr. Reefire’e Hetef, to ikfe ptoee. li# agent employed wn» #trytknkH, Which be procured from our onsulptOtlag druggist, Mr. Aoglip; in one hour thereof* ter, ho woo deed ! Wo know pf no reaeeoe lendtof him to the dreodful nltorootiTO of toying violent bond* upon himself, other then thooe giren by him self in e manuscript found 00 hie person, ood evidently to hie own bond writing, purporting to bote been writton for the pobHc, ns pub lish sd helow. Ho was on orpbon, ood o erip- pie, ood oo snob, bod boon educated bj our people for e tooohor; but foiling,'oftor repent, e l efforts, to gst o sohool in our midst, bo be came the victim of shot horrible helluefonion of mind which preoipitoted bis ood. He was remarkably sioguler in bio habit of tiolud* ing himself from company, and bio apparent distrust of oil persons, even his best friends; in thin woy he nursed o corroding motaoohol- ly which gangrened the whole of bit eslatenee, aud made his life a hateful burden. Being excessively sensitive, and early in lift the pitable ehUd of the World’s sympathy, ho eas ily became gloomy and dispoodeat, which ba in or of mind, following bias through years of suffering, finally settled open hie nunbood in a starless midnight of dispair known only to the 4< rsobly importunate'’ who weary of life —and of everything, leap down the Niagara of death, as the last final resort of the hope lessly miserable—the recklessly wretched!— It mitigates bis offence to state that ha wao suffering tbt lest months of his existence, from tbs final effects of a white swslliog— the cause of his lameness. lie was sosroely 23 years of age—a move boy ! This is aa awful comment upon human weaknoss, and— per haps—a reprimand meant for us who neglsot the smaller charities of life. A word or a smile, at the right time, might bave gone far towards dissipating his gloom. Wo know not how that is—we would not blame others more than cursrlf—but it is apparent that wrong exists and the truth abides, spurn as we will. Let us not boast of charity, but remember there is “room for improvement." Wo do not reflect upon Jacksonville; indeed, we know our citizens to be generously disposed, and not behind the foremost in deeds of charily. We furthermore venture to sty that there is Dot an inlleUigent man in the corporate limits of our town who would'bavt refused John Ra leigh any reasonable favor in his power to bestow, had the applicant stated his trus con dition in the fearless language of conscious rectitude. Last Words or John Kalkigu—Tub last EARTHLY TBT HORRIBLE RESORT. Mg Dear Friendt: I mm now aware of the stern and appalling reality that the world has no use for me ; consequently 1 have none for it, unlesss it would give roe employment, whereby I might support myself decently and honestly in the sight of all men. It owes ev ery man a living, provided he makes the right effort to procure it; yet, it has refussd mo on the right aud on the left 1 After spending two years attentively in preparing myself to enter business, (upon the expense of the pub lic too—of which I have ever been ashamed,) it looks hard indeed, that the world either cannot, or will nof, give me employment. My preparations for it bave provsd in vain, and all my hopes forever crushed. Alas, how few there are who know, and appreciate the real and glorious pleasures of employment! This horrible and unseeming resort which l am about to make, ia looked upon by the universal world as a low, cowardly act—and so it is by all oases except this—for, I believe, that Almighty God will justify me in this last earthly resort, because if I remain, my only chance to proeure a livelihood will be to beg it—but “ to beg, I am ashamed." Besides, it would be at present, and forever hereafter, an irrepariable disgrace, and rsproaoh upon my self—my God and my country ! My friends, if 1 could only get employment of any kind, God knows 1 would not eommit suicide—no, not for a billion sueh worlds as this 1 But alas, alas, I have tried and tried again, and every scheme has as vet failed. It would seem as though Fate had clinched me with her iron fangs to makt a suicide of me. “ The period to whioh I have a home paid for, is about to expire; this will leave me a lonely and a solitary beggar, in this fair Soulhera village, among a free, high-minded and intelligent people, where beggary ougbt not to be known! Hence, it behooves me, in view of such an awful and inexpressible con dition, to take a leap into aa unknown world, ‘from whsnoe no trnvetor'returnf,’ where ma terial substance is uot productive of life and happiness. Though this be a voluntary act, no pen—however able or profound iia guide may be, can possibly picture the horror and shame which 1 have in carrying it oat; bat 1 cannot but prefer it te one which would ere long put me far below the brute ortaiion. I believe that the Supreme Being will pardon me and waft my wounded spirit to ctlsstial regions of endless bliss, where 1 shall praise Him throughout ceaseless agss. My dear friends, with thsse few rsmaiks, 1 ask yon all to meet me to Heaven, and now bid you a long and lasting farewell. JOHN D. RALEIGH." The foregoing letter bears evident marks uf having been prepared in the country, where the writer bad been teaobiog school during tbs lent two or three ifionthe immediately previous to his coming to Jacksonville—manifestly de termined to die, la the event of failing to get employment. We give the subjoined Post script, written just before tht fatal act : h P. 8. Friends, I am rsally sorry to say that I shall hats to leave this world indebted to coma six or eight men, whioh in all amounts to about $25. Though, when I went ia debt, I was eoafident I would be able to meet my contracts. But the people who promised me a good school, have refused to do so, In conse quence of whioh 1 oannot meet my debts. 1 would make another mighty effort te get a soheol had I the means to travel; but tbs thing is out with me—I’ve no friends, se money, no credit, no home ; whioh leaves ms at the end of my row!"
