liana ia olrfuT.lloa b ■ Ik* Abolftlonl.n for Silt Ik* removal *f Marshal Jones of (hU district, on aooeunt of kf* r*«#at execution of tbo fugitive stave law | To /lit Excellency Abrah i* ‘fsineotn, President of Iht United States : ;. ,»W> Th* undersigned would reepeoiively yet ur- gtsdj potion ye*f fiio^e/ W ^*®ofo John U. Jon*** ih* present United Steles Marshal for ths Northern Diatriot of Illinois. Tour poiiiions would nrgo (hr following rea sons for such removal: We cbarg# upon ibs now Marshal a sapor serviceable seal in tbe execution of (ho fugitive slav* law. We be Her* that his designs fa (his rsipect are trsi torous to tbs Rpublioan parly, sod that be is in complicity with tbs leading men of lbs De mocrat io parly to accomplish lhat object in this Stats, which bo assuredly will do unless bs shall bs removed. For proof of bis inten (ions in ibis regard, wo cite ths facts: 1st. That during ths eight ysurs of previous administration* no arrests were made under tbs law fa Ibs oily sf Chicago. 2<1. We charge (hat the only Deputy that tbe new Marshal has appointed is and bas beeu a Buchnoaa Democrat. 3d That h* has retained in his service a portion cf ths old Democratic Deputies. 4th. Ws seats of no charge that said Joses in at lesst one instance stated his inability to attsod to important civil business, coming within tbs scops of bis ordinary official duties, giving as a reason that the said Buchanan De puty was the only maa of his force that un derstood the business referred to. and that be thooaid Deputy, was engaged in “this nigger bisetoess.” 6th. Wo obarge upon the information which ws implicitly credit, that said Jones and bis Deputies, in planning the arrest, and in arrest ing tbs family of Ira Harris, in Ibis oily, on the 3d day of April fast , conducted them selves la s barbarous and inhuman manner; that their treatment of the wife and children of said Harris was cruel and indecent, aod such as to demand imperatively the immediate attention of your Excellency. We io«ist that nothing short of the removal of said Jones will save from destruction the Republican party iu Northern lllintie. Chicago, April fi, 1801 We should be glad if any living mortal would bring to ligiu a rarer morsel than tbie same petition. Ws refuse to comment. Let the world read, and see what ibe Abi.liiioni*»* expect of Abraham Lincoln, ami l ow deeply they respect the Constitution and laws which they are demanding to be executed elsewhere at the expense of a civil war — C>i»cego Times.
