The Naval Expedition to Charleston— Why the
Ships did not Re-inforce Sumter, nor come to
the help of Anderton—They were eure he was
able to stand the Fire—flow mad they pot,
when he Surrendered— How they cried and cuss
ed—How they would have helped Anderson, if
he had not Surrendered.
Correspondence of the Philadelphia Press.
U. 8. Sloop Pawnee, "l
Opf Charleston, S. C., April 18, 1851. /
This ship left Norfolk, under 4 sealod orders,’
on the 10th, twenty mile* outside Cepe Henry.
These sealed orders directed us to 4 proceed
ten miles of Charleston ’—no more, no leas ;
no word of instiuction, caution, or prapara-
tion. Arriving off Charleston, we found ly
ing at anchor the revenue cutter Harriet Lane
and mall ateamer Baltio. On board the latter
are great quamities of provisions and 260 aol-
diers, under the command of Captain Hudson,
4th Artillery. This looked like an attempt to
re-inforce Sumter. Sufficient has been gath
ered to justify the writer in reporting that the
expediiion was conoeived in secrecy, carried
out hastily, without time to mature any plan
for its successful termination, and finally was
at the last hour completely orippled by the
withdrawal of the only effective ship attached
to the expedition, namely, the Powhattar.—
This ship bad been filled or supplied with a
number of rifled howitxers, for boats, and bad
a large complement of men, to man launches.
These were absolutely neoessary to carry out a
landing party to convey into Sumter men and
provisions. Besides the great number of guns
mounted in battery on both sides of ibe chan
nel, considerable naval preparation had been
made in Charleston harbor. A line of light or
fire ships had been anchored directly in a line
outside of Sumter; these consisted of old
hulls, filled with tar barrels, &c., ready to be
ignited as soon as a hostile furce approached
from sea, thus lighting up the channel, and
bringing into view the approaching boats.
Besides, a number of small tugs, pertectly
acquainted witbnhe channel, were hovering on
guard. The physical and boat power of the
Harriet Lane and Pawnee is very small—the
Pawnee mounting but one boat bowitser, the
Lane none at all. At 8 80 A. M,. the Baltic
and Lane steamed in towards the bar ; as they
eared, the sound of oonnonading was beard.
The Baltic steamed back to the Pawnee, whom
she * met advancing ’ The Harriet Lane gave
chase and stopped a steamer, wbiob proved to
be the Nashville, of New York. Approaching
the harbor, our suspicious and fears were veri
fied. A rapid and incessant fire was being
kept up froiu Moultrie, Point Cummings, aud
a number of batteries along Morris and Bulli-
van’s Island. The wind was blowing almost a
gale, while the surf upon the bar was very
heavy. Preparations were at once made by
the Pawnee and Harriet Lane to throw in pro
visions and inen. The badness of the weath
er, the non-arrival of the Powhatan and Poca
hontas, and the certain couviotion that Sum
ter could hold out till the 15tb, and after that
as long as they had provisions, induced the
officers of the Pawnee to delay the attempt for
the night.
The weather was bad during the night of the
12th, but the firing was kept' up with credita
ble nerve on both sides. On the morning of the
13 h, wind still blowing fresh, and a heavy
sea on, from 7 A. M., till 8 a rapid firs was
kept up by the rebel on Sumter. At 8.20 dense
volumes of smoke issued above its walls. 8iill
waved the American flag. In a short time
the flames were distinctly visible at our dis
tance, ,und through the blaze of a noonday
sun. At 2 the flag-staff fell having had sev
en shot in it. At this time a flag of truce was
carried from Moultrie to Sumter by 8enator
Wigfall of Texas, who begged Major Ander
son lo * stop for the sake of humanity.’—
Negotiations were entered into. Major An
derson demanded and received the terms of an
honorable evaonaiion. A flag of truee waa
sent in from the Pawnee to obtain informa
tion. Tbia boat was brought to by the batter
ies at Cummings’ Point, and informed, with
great pomposity, by an officer who styled him
self ‘ Inspector-General of the Army,’ that
Major Anderson had unconditionally surren
dered, and that no communication could be
held with him.
When our boats brought back that word,
there was scarcely a dry eye on board the Paw
nee-strong men choked with emotion, and
smote their breasts—curses, loud and deep,
were hurled at the men who, rebels to their
nation, had triumphantly degraded that flag,
and fought vindictively under rebel standards.
Had not this surrender been precipated, the
Pawnee’s Pocbanhontas* and Lane’s men, with
the soldiers from the Baltio, would have been
at the base of 8umter, or would have perish
ed in the attempt.
