Obaxoebubo, 8 C., May 7, 1801. Terrible Tornado—lie Oouree and Fffecte—Sin gular Power of the Whirlwind—Lott of Life—The Phenomenon, etc., etc* The great tornado which swept over our dis trict yesterday afternoon will long bo remem bered as one of the most remarkable as well as disastrous calamities which have ever ooeurred in this neighborhood. It began about balf-past four o'clock, going from west to east. It first broke in ite fury upon tbs plantation of L. C. Glover, Esq., do ing much damage to the fences and very seri ously injuring one of bis negroes. Rapidly passing from ibis locsliiy, it rusbed in its deso lating course successively over ibeplaniaiions of R. T. H. Legare, J. J. Andrews, H. Kills and H. Wannamaker, (earing (be fences to pieces, and ripping up lbs crops most fright fully. It next swept through the plantation of Mrs. John O'Cain, utterly destroying all the buildings upon ber place, crippling one lit tle negro, and (browing Mr. Geo. 11. Pooeer about ( 100 feet, literally oovering him with lumber. It next passed to the plantation of Dr. J. O. Jenkins, and here ibe work of devas tation was most complete. The Doctor’s dwell ing and out-buildings were entirely new, and well arranged, but so utter was the destruction wrought in a momer t by tbe furious whirlwind that scarcely a vestige of any of the houses remain. Two of his negroes were instantly killed, and be himself, bis wife and child and two negroes were badly bruised and wounded. The hurricane next passed over the plenta- lion of Joo. Riokenbscker, Esq., destroying all bis negro houses, and wounding one or two of liis negroes. It then passed over Four Hole Swamp, but what damage it has occasioned beyond, is not yet ascertained. Tbe course of the gale which I have indica ted, extends fora diatauce of tweuty five miles, and tbe width of the path of the whirlwind was about a quarter of a mile. Tbe roar of the tempest was frightful. When first seen, the whirlwind was red, but soon afterwards it be came very black. Its power was wonderful, and it bore heavy fragments of Dr. Jenkins’ bouses more then two milee from tbe site of the houses. In iraieraiog tbe wood it twisted up and prostrated the largest pine trees in every direction, and in one instance it tore up a stone wall entire, leaving it with its founda tions highest. 1 may give you hereafter some further accounts of the effects of this tremen dous tornado. From the Charleston Courier, May 13th. The Hcam-Shlp Niagara. This steam frigate, which was reported some days since was coming off this port to block ade the harbor, was first noticed off here at an early hour on Saturday by Pilot Boat No. 4, then outside the bar, and also from tbe steeple of tbe Custom House. The pilot boat observed in tbe offing on Fri day evening what appeared to be a merchant ship bound in, and which, not beiug in sight on Saturday, was no doubt ordered off. To wards midday tbe Niagara disappeared, but returned off the port in the afternoon. On Saturday .Captain Robert Lockwood, pi lot in Boat No. 2, (the W. Y. Ltitch,) look to sea tbe schr. Minnehaha, for Baltimore ; soon after leaving which vessel outside, he made a square rigger standing in for the bar. Being anxious to board, but not liking the Niagura, then in sight, he concluded to send bis large boat into port, and lake to his skiff with a trusty hand. He reached tbe vessel about 7 P. M., and found her to be tbe British barque Dilja, from Ltvjrpool, consigned (0 Messrs. R. Mure & Co. Tbe time being loo late to gel ber in to port, be remained on board during Satur day night, bis skiff being taken on deck and carefully placed away. On 8unday morning, it being calm, he was unable to get ber under way, and about balf-past 8 A- M. she was boarded by a boat from the Niagara, comman ded by R. L. May, who informed the Captain of the Jfilja that tho port was blockaded— tbe rebels inside having fired on Fort Sum ter with a garrison of less than 100 men ; gave him a Yankee peper containing tbe latest news, and mentioned that an army of 100,000 meu had landed in Louisiana. Tbe Captain of tbe J/i'Ja informed the boarding officer that he wts short of water, and requested a supply from the Niagara, but he was informed that tbe fri gate bad less of the article than was necessary for ber. Tbe following is a copy of the en dorsement of Lieut. R. L. May on the papers of the IWja: Boarded May, 12th and ordered off. The whole Southern coaet of the United Statee of America ; it being blockaded. (Sigoed) R. L. MAY, Lieutenant U. 8. Steam Ship Niagara." The officer remained by the Jlilja for about tweoty minutes, when he left. Tbe boat’s crew bad a revolver each in a belt attached to the waist. Mr. Lockwood left the lli'ja about 10 A. M , and reached tbe city In his skiff, ac companied by a valuable boat hand, who re mained faithful, although appearances indica ted that tbs boy hs4 only to open his motufc when he might h*** had s passage to some other place than “ Dixie’s Land." The J/Uja went off during the day, end will proceed to 1 he British Provesees. The British ship Monmouth, from Liverpool, and the ship General Park hill, from tho same place, were teen off the bar yesterday, aad were ordered off; and we understand that the Niagara had previously seat off three other square rigged vessels During Sunday tbe Niagara went •« 1 off shorn, aocomponied by two of tho above vessels, sod while she was abseot| tbe British shipld Jf A., Cept. Hutchinson, from Belfeot, stood in from (be eastward, when tbs Niagara mads after her ; but tbe ship, haviag much ibe start, was run into shoe) water, where the frigate could sot well sMressb ber, when the Niagara put about nod stood South. If ibo boots of tbo Niagara fail to board ber be fere tbls morning, oho mey bo got lot* port, with tbo aid of sioam, In the morning.
