moat terrible spectacle that can he seen ; aad
although it ia not unoommon to the lababi-
taota, do traveler hue ever mentleotd It. We
were tea men on horseback, two of whom took
the lead; in order to eoood the paatafe, while
I preferred to ekirt the great foreot. One ef
the bleeke who formed the vanguard returned
at a full gallop, aad celled io me: "Here eir;
eomoaadeee the errpeota la a pile." He
pointed out to me aometkiag elevated In tha
middle of the earaana or swamp which look
ed like a bundle ef artna. One ef mj compa
ny theta said, “This lo certainly one ef the
assemblages ef serpents which heap theaieel-
vee oo each other after a violent tempest. I
have heard of these, but have never seen any ;
let ue proceed cautiously, end not get too
near/' We were within twenty paces of it;
the terror of our horses prevented our nearvr
approach, to which none of ue were ioelined.
On a sodden the pyramid mass became agita
ted ; horrible hiaeioge issued from it. Thou
sands of serpents rolled spiral!/ cs each oih«*
er, shot forth out of their ohele their hideous
heads, nod presented iheir enormous darts and
fiery eyes to ue. 1 own I was one of the first
to draw back ; hue when I saw this formida
ble phalanx rem«iaing at its poet, aad appear-
lag to be more disposed to defend Itself than
to attack us, 1 rode around in older to view
its order of battle which faced the enemy on
every side, i then sought whet could be the
design of this numerous assemblage, and I
concluded that the epecteo of serpents dread

Ax Unmitigated Outmaob by a Skw Yobjk
Mob.—It io currently reported in town, and
generally believed, asthe report comet through
an authoritative channel, that Mr. G. B. La
mar, a native of Georgia, but for many years
pest doing business in New York, wberw he
formerly oocupied the positioa of President of
the Bank of the Eepublie, was recently requir
ed by a mob to give $500 for the support of
the families of Volunteers, nod, upon hie re
fusal, he was taken hold of end threatened
with instant banging oa the nearest lamp
post. Under this threat, and completely over
powered, Mr. Lamar ooneented to give the
money, remarking that he did so only on com*
pulsioa by superior force, whereupon the mob
required that the sum should be $1,000, and
Mr. Lamar was thus held until he gave bis
check for the latter amount, and a runner was
despatched to the bank to get the money.—
When tbe money was received he was releas
ed.— Aug. Chronicle <V Sentinel.
