plied with ifteen rounds cartridges and four
days* provlaions for each man, started to-day
for the Invasion of Virginia. The New York
7ih, 9th, and 12tb Regiments, Sberman.s Bat
tery, the Fire Zouaves, one Regiment from
New Jersey, ene from Michigan, and the Dis
trict Militia, eompriae tke Brigade.
The Virginia picket guard were previously
driven in by tha ad vauca guards of the Federal
forces.
One Regiment took tha road leading to Fair
fax Court House, twenty miles from Washing
ton ; another stopped at the iorka of tha road,
one mile from Long Bridge; tha Seventh ad
vanced midway between the Bridge and Co
lumbia Spring, on the line of Railroad.
The District troops will return to Washing
ton this morning.
Tha Fire Zona vet, (Lincoln's “Pet Lambs,”)
tha 14th, 69tb, and the Jersey Regiments, hold
Alexandria.
Arlington Heights is occupied by several
Regiments.
Tha entry of the Federal troops into Alex
andria, this morning, waa attended by tha
death of Col. Ellsworth, commander of tha
Zouaves. Ha was shot while hauling down a
Secession lag—supposed by a concealed foe.—
Vary great exoitement prevails amoDg the
military in conaaquence.
Tha body of Col. Ellsworth will be taken to
Washington.
Tha invading columns ia variously estimat
ed to contain from six to tan thousand men.
8t. Louis, May 24 —Gan. Price ordered 4,000
of tha State Militia at Jefferson City to disband
They made some resistance ; but it is believed
they have quietly[dispcrsed.
A howitzer, a mortar, with a quantity of balls
and shells, and 800 pounds smunition, have
been sent from the Arsenal here to Cairo.
Wasxikoto*, May 24 — Col. Ellsworth's per
sonal friends,including Mr. Lincoln, are deep
ly affected ia consequence of his death. The
bellsare tolling, buildings dressed in mourning,
and flag® flying at half-mast. HU remains are
lying in state at the Navy Yard.
Tbs Government has startling intelligence
to-day from Baltimore. Loud and prominent
Union men are secretly.abetting the Secession
ists. Their names end places of abode are
known.
The Seventh Regiment occupy Arlington
Heights, and the 89th are throwing up breast
work*.
Three hundred and forty-five Virginia Cav
alry surrendered to day to 8hersaaa’s Battery,
finding themselves unexpectedly at the mouth
of his guns.
The eteamer Mount Vernon, came nigh
sinking before reaching Alexandria. It is sup
posed she was secretly injured at the Navy
Yard before leaving.
Harper's Ferry and Norfolk are to he simul
taneously attacked.
The Postmaster General has ordered the
discontinuance of the mails to all the seceded
States, except Tennessee.
Spain has ordered six first class screw wa
frigates to New Orleans.
The Privateer steamer Calhoun, has cap
tured two schooners.
Niv Orleans, May 25.—The news from
Waahiogton of the occupation of Alexandria
by the Federal forces, has greatly increased
the military euthusiasm here.
LATER FROM EUROPE.
St. Johns, N. B, May 26.—The steamship
iStna has arrived at Cape Race, with Liver
pool dates, via Queenetown, to the Ittth inst.
The sales of cotton during the four days
preceding her sailing, reached 23,000 bales, of
which speculators and exporters took 7,000
bales. The market had declined from one-
eighth to three sixteenth, closing dull.
Breadstuff# and provisions were steady.
The Bank rate of interest had advanced Od.
The Commissioner* from the Confederate
States bad reached Paris, apd had an inter
view with M. Tboqrenel.
The British Government had issued a proc
lamation declaring its intention to maintain a
etrict impartiality between the Governments
of the United Slates and the Cotton States,
styling themselves the Confederate States;
and warning all British subjects that they
will forfeit the protection of that Government
if they shell engage on either side.

MONETARY.
No New York Exchange of any amount in
market; nor is there any demand except hy
parties representing Western houses or for
small balances due No funds going North or
West, of course stops the demand for exchange.
Money matters are decidedly easy.
The demand for Specie has also ceased ex
cept for email amounts. We quote nominally
10 *1 cent, for Gold.
But little Tenneesee or Western funds ere in
market. They command 206 *0 cent.
