Owiujo Up.—Th* f.bric of Naw York',
mercantile prosperity lies in ruins, benenth
which ten thousand fortune# are bnried.—
Many n merchant bad toiled early and late,
and planned and schemed when he should
have elopt, had denied himself needful relax
ation and enjoymaot, In order to " make bis
pits,” which be had juet about completed, end
was preparing to retire and spend the decline
of his life in ease aod comfort, when the crash
oame and swept everything before it. Last
Fall ha was n capitalist; to day he ie a bank
rupt—bankrupt in ansrgy, in hope, in raso-
lulion—and doomed to go down to bis grave
a depandent and n wreek.—Neto York Tri
bune, 27 tb.
tSF H appears from reports of the New
York " Tribune,” and other papers, that Lin
coin’s officers have orders from Washington to
permit no merchandise or provisions to cross
tbe Ohio river going southward, exoept to
those Kentuoky town* which shows that they
need the provisions for home consumption,
and then only in quantities sufficient to sup~
ply their wants. Think of that! We sap*
pose, to make the limitation effectual and to
prevent deception, tbe Federal official will
take na inventory of tbe state of the family's
meal-tub aud other supplies of the larder, and
apportion to the people rations for n week er
n month at a time. And Kentuoky, be it re
membered, is yet one of the United States,
with not a proposition pending for secession !
Such pitiful despotism ought to drive any peo
ple to resistance and we feel assured that the
Kentuckians will no longer endure it.—Col’
humbug Enquirer.
Major Albbby J. Smith.—The friends of this
patriotic officer will be pleased to learn tbat|be
has escaped from Key West, where he hae been
detained for tome time by order of tbe Lincoln
Government, in consequence of the resignation
of his commission in the United States Army.
Tha Major left Savanneh en the Mth ultimo
for Richmond, to offer hia aid to President Da
vis. He was one of the moat prominent officers
of the United 8tatee Army, and a great favor
ite of General Scott.
