A correspondent of the New York “ Spirit of the Timas,” writing from Copperas Pro* oinot, Illinois, gives (be following aa among tbe (( rioh ones” wbiob his researches from among the legal reoords have brought to light. We give bis own language: “In examining a land title, (he other day. which involved a question of legitimaey, I stumbled upon tbe following marriage certifi cate, wbioh is decidedly too good to be lest, and is litarally bona fide. The marriage, of which this is the only legal evidence, look place in Copperas Precinct, in this country, or rather in the primitive times, and the mag istrate ought to be immortalised, whether he ever getn bis commission or not. The certifi cate is in these words: Stats or Illinois, Peoria County, ss. To all the World, Greeting: Know ye that John Smith end Peggy Myrea is hereby certi fied to go together and do aa old folks does, anywhere inside of Copperas Precinct, and when my commisiion comes I am to marry ’em good, and date ’em back to kivsx acci dents. O. M. R , Justioe Pssoe. “I put tbe initials only of tbe magistrate for the reason that thin legal lominary ia still living, and probably too modest to covet tbe fame to which he is justly entitled. Don’t he deserve a pension, and the unanimous thanks of those interested in the rapid peo pling of tbe 8tate, as well as those who ean’t wait for commissions 7 ” B&T Vice-President Stephens, of tbe Con federate 8tates, was reported dead by the Northern telegraph, day before yesterday, and the Submisaioniats hereabouts tried to sbed a few lkohrymose tears over his past virtues, untimely end, &o., winding up with the unanimous verdiot that the South had lost its best mnn. The dispatches yesterday, however, announoed that Mr. Stephens had addressed a meeting of bis fellow ciiisens in Warreoton, Georgia, on Monday, resulting in their voting a subscription of 4,000 bales of cotton to proscoute (be war. That ia equal to over a quarter of a million of dollars; a good round sum for one small towo to sub scribe.
