There were young Itdieo oud young ladiee’ sweetheart#—young men with moustache, tod young men without moustache— married ladiea—(no old maids)— Colonels to tbe'amount of three—Majors and Adjutaota ia profusion—Captains, it—Lieu tenants tO or more, and soldiers, aa privates aad non-commissioned, by the bueket full— total, near 560, and all appeared to hare rad caps, shared heads, long heads, busby heads, but no swell heads. Among the leaders of ths Amateurs, waa tho inimitable Bill, who noser appeared to better sd rentage, for ho had a thome perfectly inexhaustablo for hia famous improvisatore, and ha need it to adrantsge, as the Colonels well know, for he hit them sorer- al broadsides, and they finally had to “root hog, or die." Butthe transition from thetenor roiceof Mr. B., to that of tha oharming treble and alto of the Misses W., was truly fine, and as thay warbled eong after eong, the feolinga of this rest throng rose with them, aad tha gratitude felt was silent, but deep. Then there was Mi* M. and Mr. K., who ferored us with tenors and altoa In almost ovary piece, and I assure you that towards thsm and the few who farored us with instrumental mnsic, compliments were not acarce. But Lless me! how careless! I come near forgetting the Doctor. Excuse me, I shall not offend again. 'Tjs true, Doctor, that when I “lay me dowu to sleep," it ap- peard that Gabriel had sounded his trumpet, and ns note after cote pealed forth, I could hear nothing but “Blow ye vindB of morning " How can 2 thank you, Doctor? command me! And then I say, that all sellers of lager should adopt tbee, Doctor, and that all ths Dinahs and Viilikens should adopt you, supplying you with tour krout and bolognas during life. The evening's entertainment concluded with tho touching and favorite old ballad, “good bye," and as its last dying cadence of a “sol dier's grave" floated on the breese, I cast my eyes involuntarily to the front and rear, and tears, hot tears that had alumbered for years, gushed forth, and trickled down the cheek of old and young. I thanked Heaven then, that 1 was a soldier. The nett proceeds, the tickets being free, were devoted to the future welfare, prosperity and happiness of the “Southern Confederacy" Mark the last two vrorde. A court of inquiry waa forthwith detailed, to as certain whether it meant the seceded States or your paper. Tho result has not yet transpir ed, but you know, “birds of a feather, Ac." Tha latest dispatch states that lb© Southerners were only 800 strong, with two oau&eoa, Thalr lose was about 76 killed and about as many woaadod. Tha Federal loss ia 11 killed and 36 wounded, tha abort is approved by Gan. MsCUlU*; but bis own diapateh to Washington reports 20 killed aad 40 woandad. Apparently, the Federal* had made plans for a certain victory, and had sent out bulle tin* containing an account of tho fight aad its results before the fight took plaoe; but in oonsequonoe of a oourior, who had bo«i sent out to obtain information, losing bis wny, Mo- Cltliaa waited a whole day for a sigaal, which ba did not get. In cooseqatnoa of this, the enterprise resulted only in dislodging eight hundred Southerner* with n foroe of five Fed eral regimants. Washington, July 14ih.— 1 Two Southern la- dies, who inveigled Capt. Goodwin, of Con- neetiout, to hia capture by tha Confederates a few days ago, have been arrested and are held aa prisoners as a guarantee for Goodwin's safe return. Hon. John B. Clarke, member of Congress from Missouri, has besn expelled from tho House for having served under a State law of Missouri as a soldier, [to protest his people from the encroachments of Federal usurpa tions —Eds. Confederacy.] Boston, July 14.—A French vessel with aa Admiral on board has arrived at Halifax, lit is awaiting the arrival of six other vessels, when ths fleet will sail for tho South. [Aba had belter be looking out for hit blockade.] The Steam Frigate Vincennes, is looking out for the Privateer Jeff Davis, which has recently captured several Boston vessels. Richmond July, 15.—On Thursday last, a detaohment of Cavalry, six miles from New port News encountered a detachment of the enemy ; killed four and took twelve prisoners. Passengers to-day from Staunton (in Au gusta oouuty, Va.,) stats that reports ars cur rent there, that the Confederates had mot with severe reverses at Laurel Hill. One report states that sixteen hundred men under Col. Peck were surrounded about 100 miles from Staunton, and that Qen. Garnett’s command has been compelled to evacuate Laurel Hill. The reports need confirmation ; but there has evidently been hard fighting in that section. A letter will appear in the Richmond Dis patch to-morrow, dated Laurel Ilill the 7tb, which says there has been another fight and a success for the Confederate troops at tbia place. ‘Before daylight this morning out troops were aroused by the firiug of the picket guard. About daylight another volley was fired about a mile off, and the excitement was increased by a rapid movement of the Georgia Regi ment and tha Cavalry. The Georgia Regiment held the enemy in check and kept up the fire until 3 o’clock in the afternoon, killiug and wounding many of the Federals. At 8, the Georgians retired, and their position was oo- pied by other regiments.' Another letter to the Dispatoh dated Lau rel Ilill, 9th July, referring to the oontinued fight, says: The gallant Georgians, under Col. Ramsey, were again engaged early on Monday morning, and until a late hour in the day kept up a continous fire. The Georgians left the ground at a late hour in the day, without a man killed or injured. The Lynchburg Republican of to morrow morning will contain a statement that a skir mish occurred 12 miles from Winchester, in which two Federals were killed and thraa prisoners were taken. The Confederates were uninjured. Nothing of importance has transpired at Manassas and other points. Qov. Letcher, under a requisition from tha Secretary of War, will publish a proclamation to morrow calling into immediate service the militia of all the counties North of James River and East of the Blue Ridge, as well ss the militia in the valley in the State North cf James River. The Cincinnati Enquirer, of the 10th inst., confirms tho report of the oaptur* of three entire companies of Federalists by O. Jennings Wise. The ene ay occupies Phillippt, Buckhanan and Burlington, which ths Enquirer thinks may help Gen. Wise. Reports brought here by passengers rela tive to the fight at Rieh Mountain, through out, ara confused and unreliable, and every way unsatisfactory. One passenger in high official position, states that only three compa nies, under Lieut. Col. Pegram, were engaged with the Federals. Ths loss of the Confede rates in killed is from 80 to 40. Colonel Pegram was seriously woundsd and taken prisoner. Aboot 800 Federals ara re* ported killed. Many Confederates, supposed to be killed or taken prisoners, havs sines reached tka Confederate eamp uninjured. However intense the interest for reliable nawa about this battle, it is impossible yet to obtain It. Thirteen prisoners wars brought boro to day from Yorktown; alto two spies. • p. e.
