It la an erroneoua impreaaion, which pre vails with many ptreone, that Sunday la a day of Irnca in time of war,'and is obserred by armies in conducting hoatUitioo. History tells us that the great.battl* of Barnett waa fought on Eaator Sunday, Aprii 14, 1471.— The battle af Val, or Laffold, near Maaolrlobt, was fought on Sunday, tho 2d of July, 1757 Tho Peninsula wu fruitful in Sunday fighting, l’bo second battle in Portugal, that in Fimlera, waa fought on Sunday, 31et of August, 1808. Tha battle of Fuenlua d’Odor was gained ou Sunday, tha 6lh of May, 1811. On Sunday craning 16th of January, 1812, Lord Helling Ion loaned tba brief but determined order that “Cnidad Roderigo must bt oarriod by assault tbia araning at seren o’clock.” Tho battles of Orlboa waa fought on Sunday, the 27th or February, 1814, and that of Toulouse, the last general aotlon of tho Paninsula war, oceurred on Eaator Sunday, tb* 10th of April following. The battle of Waterloo waa alao decided on Sundey, the 18th of June, 1815. The second Burmese war afforded two examplea—Eaator Sunday, the 11th of April, 1855, tho attaok on the lines of defence at Rangoon, and Iha attaok aed capture of Pegu, on Sunday, tho 21st of Norember, 1852. The rlotory of In- kerman waa aohiared on Sunday, the 5th of Norember, 1854; and, to crown the whole, it wee on Sunday, the 10th of May, 1857, that tho terrible Indian mutiny broke out at Mea nt. To this may bo add the glorious Coafedar. at* Violory at Manauaa. Northern War Feeling on the 41b July— How le It Now. A significant indication of tho exioting po pular onthuaiaam in faror of a rigorous pro secution of tho war, was afforded la-day da ring lbs rending of the President's Message ia the Houae of Repreeenlatiras. Upon the reading of the recommendation that, In order to giro the legal means for making this can- test ehort and decisive, Congreae should plaee at the disposition of the Government for thie purpoee at least four hundred theueand men end four hundred millions of dollars, an lira* preaaibla shout of approbation flllod tho Houae proceeding alike from the floor and gallariee, end seemingly aa unanimous as It waa oertain- ly enthuslaa.io. It was an outpouring of feel ing from the popular heart whioh | a far ore* that the people are far ahead of the Government In their desire for a rigorous prosecution of the war, and a abort and decisive .contest.— X. r. Herald. Brutal Outrage*. The Editor of the Lewieburg Chronicle, who it in the army, and connected with the command of General Garnett, near Phllllppa, in hla Inst letter to his paper says, tha Inva ders are parpratrtalng upon tho loyal eUl.aaa about Phllllppa enormities ef the moat axa- crable character. Not content with salting and appropriating to ther own nee, or d octroy ing any and every kind of property which may fall ia their way, the monatere here been hunting married femalee, from heuee to haute, for the gratification of their brutal loats.
