list of casualties in Gen. Wofiord’s l.riua.le. in
the late batilre in Virginia. furni*h« <1 l>y the Ad-

thousands of our readers will peruse it with
deep and painful anxiety. In our morning's
issue will lie lotiud a most interesting letter
from a correspondent, who ie widely known,
giving an account of the pirt taken by the bri-

Tl.e Mystery Kxplalntl
A few dnja ago the telegraph antuuieed
lhal. Northern papers slated that the editor of
the Atlanta Corpf.dep.acv was arrested in
New York, on bis way lo Ctnada Upon this
we made a statement in oar columns that
neither of the editors of this journal had
crossed Ibc Confedcrale lines since the war,
and had not been outside of the Stale iu a
year.
Among a hatch of Yankee items, we llnd the
following iu the Bhhtn md Dispatch, of the
14lh Inst..:-
A letter from New York, dated May 9, gives
the following item:
"Jann-H P. Hamkleton, late editor of the
Atlanta ((la ) Confederacy, caught in Ni-ff
York, has been impri-o>nrd by Maj Gen
Wind. Ila had $2*5,000 in Confederate money
on hi, person. He has applied for a discharge
on u writ of -habeas corpus.”

smtnvc P ilamblelon is the person who, a few
years since, mads bp a list of New York, tn r

Hoi them merchants. All ihn c merchants
who did not comply with the dciiiatulaof Ham

lie afterwards be ’hme the e liter of the At
lanta Confederacy, and was lately found in
this city under auaj iciotis oircumstatsoas, and
and tome $26,000 in Confederate money and
bonds were fonud in his possession, llo wa»
arrested by Msj Gen. Wool, and was conveyed
to the Park Barracks, where he has :dnee
been dotainrd. '
Judge MrCnnn has issued a habeas corpus
yesterday to bring him before him, and tc-
day he was produced by Capt. Armstrong, of
Lhe Park Ba-racks. Judge hlcCunn adjourticJ
the case until Monday, in order that Uemril
Wool might make a return to the writ. 11am-
Melon says he only ilaima a speedy exami
nation—and some rich developments are ex
pected.
We will simply remark that Dr. Hamhleton
is not tho editor of this paper. He bus no
interest in whatever, and never had. He
the editor of a paper published fora time in
this oity *,f the same namo as oars, hut which
wound up its existence in the latLer part of
the year 1860, some time before our paper was
commenced. Our enterprise was a n-wono,
independent of any other, commenced in Keh-

We have before us a dangerous counterfeit
20 dollar OoafadsrAte note. We intended de
scribing it, so as to put the people uu their
guard. On calling on 0 il. Clayton, of the
Georgia 1! lilroad Bank, we found that (here
were n>>w out a half dozen counterfoil? of the
C’s, 10’a, 2<* a »nd 5t)’s, of the variom issuer
of tin se several denominations. A roll of
cotmtcrlcil 6*s were picked up in Dr. Logan’s
back lot a few days ago. where the Yankees,
captured by t orre-i near Hume, had thrown
it, while they were in’camp under guard. We
examini d nil these all these counterfeits, and
cimpaled them with the genuine. The dis
tinctions in many of them would be hard to
describe without the bills to explain it. The
engraving of the counterfeit 20 which we have
boiore us is 6J inch*-.- long and 3 irohes wide.
*lho geuuiue is a :b ir'b of an in :h wi ie * and
a half inch longer, or nearly so The genuine
bill is engraved by B Duncan—the only issue
ol the 20’s engraved by him.
The cnly Nine ly we cau suggest is for peo
ple to acquaint themselves with the difference,
and also never lo take a hilt from any man
who is a stranger. yjjfc . 9
No Starving.
Mesar*. Anderson, Adair & Co. have handed
us a bunch of wheat heads from the plant a' i< n
of J B. Taylor, ol VVetnmpka. It is a.- lines
specimen of wheat as we ever saw. Some of
them are ripe enough lobe reaped, and all would
do to cut, if tins rust should take it in its pres
ent stage. There is however no signs of rest
in it. • ’ .’ a *
This wheat is from a cotton growing section.

the report is premature. If the proposed
sentence wus carried out, he would he sure
to be elected Governor of Ohio.
A meeting is to beheld on the 3d of .Juno
in New York. The address calling it to
gether says “We are now for a vigorous
prosecution of peace; and whilst we will
submit to no dismemberment of the Union
upon terms not justified by every principle
of honor, yet we will go fiw in the spirit of
conciliation lo restore the Union. ”
Eight thousand Germans held a meeting
in St. lioute on the 10th, and adopted a
resolution recommending the removal of
Gen. Halleok, and tho promotion of either,
Fremont, Holler or Scigle
Gen. Davidson, commanding the depart

The Herald, alluding to the death of Gen.
Jackson, says: “lie resembled Napoleon
in his early career more than any other
General of modern times. Tho victory of
Chancelloreville was dearly bought. Jock-
son was a universal favorite Lt the rebel
army, and popular even in our own. ” The
Herald gives a lengthly .sketch of his mili
tary career.
The Washington Chronicle, in speakingof
the death of Jackson, says: “While only
too glad to get rid of so terrible a foe, our
sense of relief is not untningled with emo
tions of sorrow and sympathy for so brave
a man as Jackson, lie was a great Gene
ral, a brave soldier, noble Chriatiau, au*l
pure man. May God throw these virtues
against the sins of Ihesecetaionist* who ad
vocate that national crime.”
Brandon, Miss., May ICUi—via Mobile ami
