Jackson, June 4.—Heavy firing was beard

thin morning.
It is generally believed that Oen. Kirby
Smith crossed at Port Uudson.
Things are working.
aCCOID DISPATCH.
Ttig Mittitsippian publishes the following
extra:
‘-We have received reliable intelligence of
Gen. Kirby Smith’s having crossed over at
Port Hudson with 18.000 men. The Iasi boat,
containing two hundred men.wiu sunk by tbe
enemy’* guns, and it is feared that many of
our men were drowned.
’-Gun. Smith brought over an ample supply
of bacon, and therefore all apprehensions
about the safety of Port Undson may be aban
doned.” a.
Personal.
We had tho pleasure yesterday of greeting
our friend and former Associate, Mr. J. N.
Cardcio, who hae jnat returned from Mobile.
We are gratified to find him enjoying good
health, and extend to him a most cordial wel
come lo Atlanta again.

intended,-trirned and plunged a knife into his
unsuspecting and unarmed victim, severing tho
lilac nrv*ry, and inflicting a wound. from
whioh death necessarily ensued in a few miu-

stricken wife, bis lifeblood gushing in torrent#

Dr Thornton was born in K26, in Jefferson
county Kentutky, where be was educated, mar-
ned, snd resided up to the date ot the occupa
tion nl that State by i he Federal troops, and
where his aged father, a venerable minister ot
the Presbyterian ebureb, still lives. From the
first inception ot the difficulties between the
■eciionu, he was an ardent, aciive and influential
•riend of the South; and in two days ifter Gen.
Roasean moved his Yankee legions into Louis
ville. in September, 1861, he leli behind him his
pleasant home, those dear ones who hid watch-,
ed over him in infancy and rhildhood, and the
friends ol liMTiper years, to enter tho army of
bteedom. Ilia talents, education, experience
ana high rrientifie attainments admirably fined
him for the post ol Surgeon which was at once
tendered him in llte Confederate army; and to
tbe hour of bia death, be was laboriously and
actively engaged in the discharge of the respon-
kible duties ot Ibat office. Hundreds who knew
him while in rltarge ol Hogpitais at Atlanta,
Ringgold, and this'place, and all who were at
any lime under his csre,,can testily to the
diligence, xea! and skill he displayed in his offi.
cial labors.
Bat he has been taken train be, in the prime
of file, in all the strength bt manhood—sudden
ly, rudely liken from the midst of haipiness,
from the field of usefulness.
lie has been taken from ns, and we know not
why, only that what God wills is tight.
lie his pit reded a hoset of friends, a devoted
and now heart broken wife, the many who knew
and bonortd and loved him, lo iliac country
from “whose bourne no traveller e’er returns;”
may we like hint, follow steadfastly iu the path
ol duty, in tho way of ihe jnst, that our graves,
like his, may be bedewed with the tears ol affec
tion, and the memory ot our virtue# be ireasurs
ed up in the hearts of the good who tarry yet
awhile behind! M.

. Auction Revival.
The noise and confusion on tho slroets yes
terday, growing ont of rival crying at near
half ndoxen auction sales, all in fall blast,
was very trying to the nerves of timid per
sons.
Smith U. Griffin and John S- Hutchinson
were blasting away on Whitehall stroet. Fra
xer and Brother Cayce were holding a regular
old fashioned camp-meeting near tho Post Of
fice, with a large crowd of anxioas ones around
them, who seemed deeply eonvioled of baring
heretofore bonght some things at a high prico,
and were there having.them sold at a con
siderabiy lower figure—all the result of that
perverse principle in pur raturo that causes
men to seek alter filthy lucre.
Mrny cold-hevrted outsiders looked on with-'
indifference, and som» wiib a glow of salts'
faction—noL manifrstiog fhc slightest sym
pathy .or inters*, t in the straggle of the anxiout
ones. *
Uncle Billy Hill was at -his well known
corner, with that alarming bell, warning the
careless wayfarer, thtLbnrgains, not breakers,
were ahead. Fine sjin ily were offered to those
who sought the cxhiieraling article—not the
spirits of just men made perfected.

Washington, May 28 —Advices from thi ar
my of tho Potomac state that all the enemy’s
encampments behind Fredericksburg have dis
appeared, though his picket line on the river
bank is still maintained. At Bank’s and Uni
ted States Ford*, especially tho latter, large
numbers of the enemy are gathered, and are
daily mat eeorered, though no eign* of cross
ing has been made. It was reported that a
column of the en( my was moving off towards
Culpeper, though it was aseerlained’at the
sams lime that the enemy’s aolivity was a cov

credited that tho most of Beauregard’s army
has moved awsy, but whether it has gone to
