Great Rains.
For eeveral days past we have had very'
great rains. Night ■ bofore last it r&ined al
most contincusly, in torrents, front about 8
o’clock till near 1; and yesterday morning
from toon after daylight till after 8 o’clock.
8evcral times during the day, it seemed as if
tbe heavens were opened and the water spilled
down in great sheets. At thb writing it is
still raining, with but little prospect of abate
ment. ;.
During all tbe-e heavy raias, there has been
heavy thunder and lightning, which have
kept the telegraph disarranged. We fear the
wheat crop will bo damaged.

■la your paper you recommend cultivating
poppies for opium. N*>w, toll us how to man
age them to get the opium."
In replying to the above paragraph of a
letter from W— S—, we will state that we
have not recommended, nor do we fully ap
prove of, the cultivation of the poppy. The
Medical Purveyors, however, have enoouraged
tbe enterprise, and we will waive all objee
tions, and givo each information aa will enable
poople generally to avail themselves of the
pecuniary advantages to be derived from this,
tne most profitable branch of horticulture.
Opium is the concrete juice of poppy cap
sules, and is obtained by making horizontal
incisions in the capsule or seed-pod of the
poppy, between the time of shedding the
fidWW, and the ripening of tho seed. Before
the pod is fully grown is the beet time to col
lect the gam. In abont 24 hours after making
the incisions, scrape off the drops.of gum
which have exuded, aud put them in an open
glass or eartheru vessel, and let it stand ex
poaod to a free current of air. Befure tho
drops thus coileolod become fully dry, beat
them into a uniform mass and roll into balls,
which may be wrapped in poppy leaves, when
they are ready for the market.
The first exudation from the capsule only
will make genuine opium, though the gum is so
valuable for sale, that tho pods are frequently
tapped until no more juice can be obtained.
The price of opium is ordinarily about $1
per ounoe, but at tho present time it will com
mand a more extravagant price than almost
any other blockade article.

Near Monticello, Ky., May 31, ’C3. J
Since laal I wrote you, Col. Rucker has been
over the river doing pretty much as before,
killing two, wounding two and capturing three
of the enemy’s pickets with 1000 bushels corn,
25 horses and 14 navy repeaters. This was on
tbe 28th. On the 29th Qen. - Pegram ordered
Ashby’s Regiment to'make a feint at Mill
Springs, while a portion ol the 1st Georgia
would make a similar movement, at Richard
son’s, 6 miles below, during which CoL Ruck
er went OTer at or near (J&u’s and got his
corn;
Yesterday the 30ih we were ordered to be
in readiness to movo at any moment. About
.9 o’clock news came that two - Regiments had
crossed at Mill Springs and were driving Col.
Ashby back along the Monticello road, and
that the 1st Georgia (Col. HaTper commanding)
must move immediately to his assistance, we
foil from our camp into- the Mont cello road
and moved toward Steubenville. On reaobing
this plate we met She enemy’s advance driving
CoL Ashby’s rear. We were ordered lo charge
them, (with about 125 men, four of our com
panies being on pickets.) The command was
given and away we went, the YankB fired one
volley at us and wheeling went thundering
down the pike toward Mill Springs. In this
charge Serg’t. Moj. Goodwyn was struck by a
Bpcnt ball but not seriously injured. "We kill
ed one of the 2d Ohio Cavalry. We pursued
them nntil our advance (of which I was in
command) came up with them inline of battle
one mile from Mill Springs, X moved with the
advance to their right and rear while Colonel
Harper lead the Regiment directly upon them.
Thinking thoy were attacked in the centre and
on each flank they fled again toward Mill
Springs. Col. Harper now sent me forward
with tho advance, (Serg’t. Mej and four men)
lo try and And out if they had reorossed the
river. I moved briskly ahead to the bank of
the river and as I emerged from tbe bushes on
this tide the. scoundrels turned loose a volley
ou me from the other side. A minie struck
me in tbe right thigh passing through about
three inches c*f flesh and ruined a bran new
pair of pants which you know is an item in
tl,o Coniederacy i***w. The wound is not very
painful and I hope to be able for duty in two
weeks at least. J- W. T.

The last Dumber ot ihe Republican oontains
a Utter wiitten from this city, ou the 3d inst.,
from which we make the following extraot:
Georgia can furnish as good troops as the
w.orld aver saw, and as many acoording to
population; and then those who remain at
home can beat the world making wheat, corn,
gunpowder, cannon, and all the tl eeltrar or a
grand war; and her glorious women can go
out and attend to their farms, ploughing and
working with hoes, aa we have seen Ihem do;
and some even seeded large crops of wheat
lest fall, that never knew what it was to work
their flower beds before. This we were told
by a gallant Colonel’s- wife in this place, as
coming UBder ber owa observation. Can such
apeoplo.be conquered? Never—no, never!
We are organising here, aud every man
must join a company and prepare to defend
his home, or his name witi bo published in the
dally papers here, by order of the Common
Council, as one who i9 not true to bis country;
but, so far as we ran learn, all are joining
with alacrity, and determined to-defend their
Stale against the cavalry raiders. ThU place
is second to none in importance in the Con-
I federaoy. Having extensive Government
works here, Ac., of which you have seen full
accounts.
