As 1 predicted would bo the o&ee. if it waa

our loss In killed and wounded is very heavy.
The leari estimate I have heard ia between

upon the enenr"’ right. When they came
out, six out of n»- -. hundred men could not
be accounted for. It is said they fought
with ih* desperation of tigers. One negro was
observed with a rebel soldier in his grasp,
tearing the flesh from his face with his teeth,

Our informant corroborates lbs good ac

These sable worriers provoked the most fren-

bent their euergiee to their annihilation; And
since the light they have missed no chance to
kill negro pickets In one instance they
pounced upon a single blank sentry, captured
and forthwith hnng him. This bloody deed
wag yuickly avenged, for almost within tbe
hour eome negroes got hold cf a rebel picket,
and strung Aim up in ihll view of their mur

The Tribune also eays:
Oar iaformant left Port Hudson on the
night of the Slst ultimo. There had been no
fighting of consequence sines the assault of
the 27th. Theoonterirf the 27th was very
desperate and bloody, the rebels fighting with

From Federal sources in London there ia sb yet,

Tho Hon. Spencer Walpole, M. P., speaking
at the annual dinner bf the Royal Geographical

he wonld say, that if that contest which wa9
now gring on in North America could ever be
settled, it ehould be settled by moral, social and
political considerations—by considerations, too,
of a geographical diameter, for States must be
freo to chpoae for themselves the government
they will have, and the only settlement of boun
daries they could make would be that adopted
by the treaty of Vienna, by which the great
rivers dividing States ehould be free. [Cheers.]

presence in Paris has strengthened the report of
the approaching recognition of the Southern Con-

We aro informed by Air. J. C. McDaniel
that the difficulty between Lemons and Clark
last Friday night, did not originate in bis es
tablishment, but in a neighboring barber
shop, and that Clark took refuge in his door,
while Lemoos shot at him from the street.
Mr. McDaniel further says ihat ho does not
keep an eating saloon at this time;-that he
never kept any liquors for'sate—not even
beer, and that it nevor was a resort for rioters
or disturbers of tho peace. We cheerfully
make this statement.
