Capt.
From a privato letter, which wo aro permit
ted to peruse, we gather the following interest’
ing particulars of tho part taken by Capt ain
B. F. Wyly’g company, Lsydeu’s Artillery, in
the battle at Knoxville.
It appears, that the Battalion were on Friday,
the iOtb, marching in the dircc'ion of
when Colonel Leyden received an Order from
Knoxville to send back to that place one bat
tery, as the enemy were coming to attack
the city. Capt. Wyly’s oompany was orJered
back, and came within two miles of the city
after a forood march of cine honrs. The Cap
tain there found himself pot off from the cijy
by the enemy, who were in position to atl&ok
IIo quickly put his battery ot four guns
into position. He then sent a flog of truce to
the enemy, asking who they were, making bold
demonstrations and stating that he was sup
ported by infantry. This caused the Yankee
guard to give back from the road,' and on re
turn of the flag of trace, he limbered ap hie
pieces, and made * 2.40 dash to get Ihto the
eity, passing by a full regiment of Yankee cav
alry before they oould get ready lo charge on
him; and as he came rushing into the eity,
the Confederate pickets fired a volley at the
company, thinking they were Yankees. .
The battery was immediately plaeed in po
silion, divided into two sections—Captain Wy-
ly commanding one, and Lieutenant Walipin
the o'.her. The ball was opened by Captain
Wyly's section, at - 8} o’clock, a. m., which
continued firing until 10 o’clock. The Captain
lost three men mortally and two slightly
wounded. Lieutenant Walipin’e seelion lost
none. Owing to his position the enemy did
not return his fire.
General Pegrnm and Colonel Trigg cempii
merited Captain V/yly and his company for
the tkillfal manner in which tho gone were
served, the successful game of bluff played b>
the Captain, their intrepid dash and gallantry
throughout. The Chief of General Buckner's
Staff, in his report of the action to the 'War
Department, has commended the Captain for
meritorious C-.oduct on the occasion.
We are glad to record the laurels won by
Oaptai* ft- and hia calUiit men in this their
first engagement. They are onr own best
citizens, and have done just ns everybody
know thoy would do if they ever met the foe.
The highest compliments to this battery were
moot profuse from n l quarters—even the.com
der of the Yankee force, who hod the beat
right to know the effective working of the
gnu, said that Captain Wyly’s battery bad
done the beet firing he ever saw.
From ths Charted n Conner.
Tho Produest.ro Power of the South.
Oar enemies ere‘elated with the ho$e of
c arving ns out. If there is a man in the
Confederacy who entertains a doubt of osr
ability to feed ourselvas otnl qur army, we,
refer him to the otklisties of onr export of
Wheat and fluur. in former.yeari^' which will
.scarcely foil to ralisfy him. The present
wheat crop, new nearly ready for the siokle,
covers a forger breadth of groand-than was
ever before planted, and it is admitted by all
to be the meet promising crop ever known in
the Soothers country.
An abundant yield is now beyond any con-
tiogeney, and will, in nil probability, bo snfli-
cient to furnish bread to onr people at home
and to oor armies In the field, and leave n
surplus for export. Independent of wheat,
our former cotton fields aro now producing
immense crops of born, peas, rye, oats, and
other produce for man and beast, besides

We will Limb more hogs to fatten this 'year
—five or ten wfliC* more—than were ever pro-.
- lonely raised and pat on onr markets, and we
will doubtless have qnito enough of pork and
bacon to supply all our wants.
There is scarcely a tan yard in the Confele
racy that bat not been enlarged and extended,
and most of the planters are tannitg for them
selves. So there is no probability of our suf
fering fur leather or shoes.
We have plenty of arm?, and eon make onr
own powder, and the production of iron is
rapidly increasing. Then, what indispensa
ble Article do we lock to ronder us entirely
independent ? It is that oj clothing, and,
strange to say, very little attention ha? been
paiJ, by our public authorities, toils Increased
production. Oar old etock of clathiug is fast
wearing out; the produoliun is not half equal
lo (he demand, and it has become a pcsitire
and pressing necessity to iucreaie our means
of supply. If this war continues, we will
need new factories, ami the old ones must be
extended and reunvsitrd; the hand of industry
must bo Induced lo lake hold ol the spinning
wheel and hand-loom, in evory Samlet and
cottage in the country. The question is, not
how ciie,:j> wo ran bn f.upptiod, bukjisir wc ore
jo be supplied ut ail. Ii will lie mfa to assume
tbal wo will have to-roly maiidy on home
production, which leads to tho inquiry—How
are wc lo increase tho means of.supply? It
■Will cerlamly not be done by legislative re
strictions nu prices. High ra'es must be
looked to as a niuviog cause. That our svf :ly
should depend on high prices, yea, extortion-
ale piices, id an ua omb rlablo reflection ; but
it is uu ot deal we ore doomed tv pass through,
and Ihn diiii. uliy ought lo bo willingly mei
and overcome by crcry lover of his country.
Pi ices must go up lo a p del that will romuuo
ra e the hiud louu and spindle, or we must
he without A sutlioiaut supply.
Capitalists will not bogigu to new nnunfac
turiug enterprises unless there Is a prospect of
gnat gain, and prices must uot lie restricted
by legal cuao'. moats, or cur factories will bo
.suffered to wear out and burn up without an
tfort to rcuow them; and as tor new estab-
ishments being reared, that is out of the
question with Iho existiug state of public sen
tiuieut in and out of Cougress nod our Btale
Legislatures. if half*iiie um iuut that has
been expended iu impelling calicoes, brandies
and wines, cheese, fancy snaps, and the thou
tauds of jim cracks ot Yankee manufacture
that load the (hips running the blockade, had
been vxpecd jd in machinery for the mauufao-
i ure of iho necessary art iolea, we would now
be in a situation to oarry ou the war within
ourselves and to put tho Yankees at dtfiance,
but unfortunately for ns, publio opinion has
sanctioned the idea that he who exchanges the
last golden dollar, and imports Yankee ten
cents calico, and sells it for three ilnllar* a
yard, is a benefactor to bis country, while tho
ingenious producer at homo is branded with
infamy, and indicted for extortion for selling
homo made arliclo-for a dollar an! a half.
Oar experience in the salt produo!ion affords
valuable lesson on the stimulating effects of
high prices. The unrestricted high prioe of
sail during the lost summer, no doubt helped
to save our country—and ono ihingis oert >iu,
that our meat could not be saved without il.
And so it will be with cloth. If prices be
kept down with legal restrictions, the hand-
loom and apiudlo will be restrained and dis-
cqprsged, and will not be resorted to as a mat
ter or profft; for who will buy high priced
cards to spin, and weave for a livelihood, while
there is no better pretpect than that ol
competing with factories ut forty and fffty
cents a yard ? Yua-may traverse the connlry
from one end to the other to lind persons who
can tarn their bread at tuoh prices. Twelve
or fifteen thousand curds, iuduslrioufity worked
will produoe as xsu ih cloth as a factory of
eight thousand spindles and threu hundred
looms; but os long as factory cloth is sold at
forty-five and fifty cents a yard, Ihe'cards will
not be industriously worked.
If there are not factories enough to supply
all onr wants—and there are certainly not half
enough—then it becomes a positive necessity
to stimulate private enterprises in fhe line of
cloth-making, and all legal reslraihts on the
advance of l'aotory prices will serve as a clog
ou expansive production, both of the power
and hand-loom. If Congress and the State
Legislatures desired to limit production, they
oould not pnrsuu a more certain policy to ef
fect that end, than that of restricting prices,
and every snch step taken by onr raters will
tend to embarrass and ruin our country.
When the war commenced, from bur limited
number of factories, tho prioe ol cloth ad
vanced, and the extortion rales,, said to be
charged by manufacturers—then only sixteen
to twenty cants, became a theme (er newspa
per scribblers and politicians, and our indus
trious, enterprising manufacturers, were be
rated and stigmatized as little better than
highway robbers, an£ suoh was the rage of
warfare, that the publio mind was poisoned
against them from the highest circle of poltii
mans to the lowest grade of soeiety. L:ng
discussions in legislative halls Set forth in
glowing colors tho monstrous evils of high
prices, devising various modes of restricting
them; and Congress wasted time and money
enough in sneh discu^sioue to have paid for
importing cards sufficient to supply every
working woman in the Confederacy. The
result of all this was legal restrictions on
pricos that transferred profit* from the hand
of the manufacturer to that of the speculator,
and utterly forbade the much needed expan
eton of rannufac'uring, either by hand or ma
chinery. Unfortunately for theoountry, those
restrictions led the people into the delusive
hope of cheap supplies, and many who couid
have made cloth for Inemsolves, utterly neg-
lectee the hand 1- oiu and spindle,.and *re now
unable to purchase iu sufficient quantity at
any price.
The unfriendly spirit manifested in some of
the Stales, particularly in Georgia, against
manufacturers, and tho uncertainty .that has
existed as lowhatreslrictionr might be thrown
arou.id maeuiaeluring by Cong/ess and the
several Legislatures, has deterred many who
have accumulated money, from invesiiug it in
English machinery to run the blockade. Large

■I!ow ihe Atlanta was Lost.
The Charleston papers of the 26th say lha‘
letters from the officers of the Atlanta, by flag
of truce, wore received at that city Thuisday
morning. The Courier says:
From them (tho loiters) we learn some par
tioulars ot the surrender of the uiifortanaio
vessel into the hands of the Yankees. Thu At
lanta was engaged by the Ericsson monitor,
IVeehnwken. The latter fired fifteen inch,
shell, aud struck the folania three times in
succession. One shell struck Iho pilot house,
uiplelely demolishing it, aid wounding the
Pilots, Uernaudtz and Austin—one of them
badly. The vessel then grounded, when an
other shell strnck her near amidships, perfora-
ng the iron aud wood work like s) mush pa
per, killing one man and wounding seventeen
others. Another shell struck one of ibe largo
shutters to a port- hole, piercing it through
and through, and shattering it to pieces. Two
officers wore slightly wounded by this shell
In this position, with the vessel aground
aud evory shot perforating the iron and wood
work aud passing through her, farther resist
ance was.iteemed useless, and Captain Webb,
to save life, concluded to surrender.
The officers and crew of the Atlanta wero
iramferred to the U. S frigate Vermont, and
at the date of the lotlers, June 20th,' expeoted
to leave for Philadelphia in th j James Adger
next day.
The letters speak of their treatment aa be
ing very kind, every attention being given to
their comfort, and all their wants provided
lor. The Navy offieers are represented as very
courteous and considerate.
