From Tennrs.ee.
Again we torn to the unwelcome Ink of
making np a few words from the “rumors”
we get from Tennessee, from whence we ought
to get reliable news, but cannot; ii is prohib
ited.
It is believed here, on information deemed
reliablo,. that Rosecranz attempted to flink
Bragg’s right, and that Bragg’s front is now
on or near the line of railroad -his left st
Tullahoma, and his right at Decberd. Tulla-
homa was evacuated, but it is believed to have
been repossessed by our forces.
The East Tennessee cavalry raid was ap
proaching Chattanooga yesterday, but learn
ing that a sufficient force was ready for
them, they turned away. We havo no further
particulars from the East Tennessee raid,
which was said D> be 4.000 strong.
We get contradictory reports as to the con
dition of Bragg’s srmy—Borne representing
it as in the best condition, and others teliiDg
a different tale. We however havo it on un
doubted authority that Gsn Bragg has not the
slightest approhensions, and feels perfectly
confident of the result, if a.i attack is made
on him.
It is reported (hat Forrest is ngain on the
move.
The DlaaLlcd Soldiers.
We learn that large numbers .of disabled sol
diers are responding to Col. Lea’s call for this
clssa to organize ior the defense .of this city.
They are coming in by dozens evety day.
They are composed of those who are unable to
go back to field service from wounds, but are
able to unite in forming a veteran corps lor ihe
defense of this city and the Slate Road. They
are ail proud to fitid something that they arc
able to do for their country, if an .attack is
made on this city, this body of mca will mecl
them as tried and unconquerable veterans.
Volunteers.
A Company of 110 men lias been formed ot

the citizens near by ; also a Company of luo at

panies have been returned to Col. Lee, and by
him transmitted to the War Department to pro

Messrs. Editors : It would seem silly in any
-one, so many days having elapsed since the
successful defense of this place against the
Yankees, to again advert to an affair of sach
Lilliputian dimensions, were it not for false
impressions made abroad, through the Regis
ter, in reference to its defenders. Hence, I
crave a email space in year columns.
When the intelligence of the approach of a
oroe of Taakea cavalry, en route to this place,
was first made known, the 7ih Regiment of
Florida Volunteers wss the only troops st the
post upon whom would devolve the task of
defending the city. They were immediately
placed under marching eiders, and about 3
o’clock, P M, took an advanced position ou
the Loudon rood, by which the Yankees were
advancing, and there col oily awaited the ap
proach of the foe.
In the meantime, “ detailed ’’ men from Ihe
variqus portions of the army, employed in the
Government workshops, were called into field
service, and engaged in planting and working
batteries.
Abont 6 o’clock, P M, the 6th Regiment of
Flotidavolnnleers reached the city and were
placed in position around the “ defenses “
It is true, a few citixens did arm tbemfe’ver.
and assist in tba defense of the city, bnt by
far the greater portion of the “militia” re
mains d in the slree s, Ear more solicitous foi
their personal safety, than for (he defense of
their homes. As they were not allowed lo
eroes the ferry, numbers of them inquired
anxiously abont a ford in the vicinity.
Had it not been for the vigilance of Captains
Wigge and Arnold, with their handfuUs of
cavalry, who skirmished’ with the enemy and
chicken their advance that afternoon, Knox
ville would unquestionably have “gone up.”
During the night, Arnold’s cavalry and June’s
company, in the 7Ut Florida volunteers, skir
mished eontinnally with them, and prevented
a night atiack, which they doabllesa had in
contemplation* ^
At b.eak of day, the formidable appearance
pretnted fry the array of infantry in rear and
support of (he batteries, convinced the Yan
kees of the hopelessness of taking ibe eity fay
assault The troops m.suppert of tho e bat
teries were the CUi andTtbjb'loridA volunteers,
and not “local militia.”

longer than a matter of such small dement
merits, bnt it was necessary for correcting the
impression made abroad. In a short editorial

’A tec Col Lon Supply (Jticsiiou.
From an estimate made by Neill A Brothers, ut Man-
chest, r, iu u circular lately issued by them, after a eou-
test of some IS months between English buyers
sellers, in equilibrium between demand and supply had
been attained on tho 1st of October, 1661, and the stock
of all sorts had been reduce 1 t j 160,000 bales. For the
3; weeks which bad since elapsed down to the date of
the, circular the average weekly Imports hare, been
30,800 balsa, while the w.ekly demand for home con
sumption has been restricted to 18,160 bales and the
export to U6UQ bales, making the total weekly demand
2l,G50balea. Thu? the supply had so gained on the con
eumpUon as to bring the price of Middling New Orleans
from Ssy A d. per pound down to 21 d.
In looking forward to ihe future the circular regrets
to say that the funner relation between supply and
demand Is nt likely to bo supported.
From May lat till September 26th last year, the im.
port of East India* cotton was 278,000 bales, and af
other sorts 117,000; total, 396,000. For ths same period
this year we estimate East Indiau 276 000, and of ott er
sorts, 105,000; total, 410,000.
But, says the circular, while the utmost importation
wa tan thirly took ler Is thu- outy 440,000 bales for the
five months, we estimate the consumption as follews:
The home consumption of all soils, which had lately
fallen to abont 16,ojo hales per week, has doubtless,
under Ihe recent increase ,of demand for yarns and
goods, increased to 2SI,Ujo talcs; and, as it is still rising,
there Is every probability lliat an average of 24,000 to
16.000 bales will be attained, uulesa clu cked by too
rapid an advance in the c-otion market. We may,
therefore, fairly estimate the consumption ef the en
suing twenty-one weeks at an average or not under
23.000 bales per week, or an aggregate of 433,000 bales,
against 4S6, 00 last year; uud we snail take the export
at 10,oru bales per week, or 210,00] againt 226,000 last
year. We tiare l bus to meet a demand for 693,000 bates
with an Impott not l.kely lo exceed 44'.',000. It Is there
fore evident that the present stock of 896,000 bales wilt
•have to bear serious curtailment during the summer—
a reduction probably to 100,(20 or 121,000 some time in
the month of August or .September.
&fr- A Kentucky editor advertises aa follows:
“Wanted at-this office, a bull dug ol any color,
except pumpkin and m-lk; of rcspoctab'.e size,
snub nose, cropped ears, abbreviated coot inua-
lion and bad disposition—who can come when
called with raw beefsteak, and will bite the man
who spits tobacco juice on the stove and steals
our exchanges.’’
