The people of Rome are making active prep

raids from the right wiag of Bosecrans’ army.
The CcKrirr of yesterday has a call upon the
people to furnish hands at once to erect strong
fortification.. The natural advantages for
defense are very good and can speedily bo
made very effectual against any attack of
raiders. This work is not commenced any
too soon.
The Yankees are now close enough to dash

July fi —’The enemy’s movement are be
coming Important; tlieir pickets are odvtno
ed to-day to Big Black at the different fords
north of tbe bridge.
The pickets are largely increased at Mes .
senget’s, Birdsong’s and Bush’s ferries, and
there are additional patrols all along the
river.
There has been slight skirmishing all day,
and this evening they advanced »large force
to Birdsong’s ferry, with intention, ss is sup
posed, to fortify it.
Heavy firing ie going on, and tbe battle
may take piaee any day.
Jackson, July 0.—The Mlesieslppian extra
of to-day says:
We are pained to learn, on good authority,
that' the garrison of Vicksburg capitulated
last Saturday morning.
There was no assault. The enemy sprung
mines, rendering further resistance useless.
Tbe terms of capitulation are that the gar
rison, numbering 17,500, shall be allowed on
acceptable point on Big Black to await exs
change. Officers are allowed to retain their
side arms.
The Mississipplkn says Grant # programme
is to leave a heavy garrison at Vioksburg, and
take tbe main body of his army North, which
will enable Johnston to successfully defend
Mississippi.
Ostorhaus is said to have crossed the Big
Block.
Johnston is falling hook to Jackson.

Bt*«’t Late Movement.
[Dtoyatch to tho Moldlo Adferttaer ]
Mohyoomebt, July 4. —1 arrived this even
ing from Gen. Bragg’s army, which I left on
the evening of (he .id, and I sen,! yon trust
worthy intelligence to that date.
Tbe FUTjiriaa ami explore of the Gaps forced
Bragg to retreat from Shelbyville, when he
fell bock to TullaSoma, where it was expected
Roseorans would attack him, fcnt tho latter
pasted round our right flank, compelling an
abandonment of Ihe position and a stilt fur
ther retreat to Alieonia, and afterwards to
Corydon, a strong position at tbe foot of the
range of mewifains, where it was expected be
would he sttsoked. Bnt Ihe flanking process
again compelled a retreat further Sonlh.
A large mounted force of Rosecrans’ army
attempted to piss through the mountains by
Pikeville and reach Bridgeport, to destroy
the bridges and cut off Bragg from farther^re
treat. Our forces were then rapidly with
drawn to the Tennessee- river, where they
were yesterday evening with General Bragg,
waiting the advance of the enemy.
All citizens had been ordered off The
troops were in the trenches sll Thursday
night.
The retreat was conducted in good order,
and with bnt a trifling loss of stores and none
of artillery.
A considerable number of Tennesseeans are
reported to have deserted.
The army is hopeful and expect to fight.
Thereto eating General is violently abused
by outsiders for permitting Rasecraus to out
flank him.
I do not anticipate on early engagement.
Attention, Imdryieadcmce Onnrda !
The members of this oorps are ordered to
meet at the Engine House of Fire Co. Nj. 4
this (Thursday) evening, at 6 o’clock, for the
purpose of practising in the Infantry drill.—
All perAms who toko interest in Ihe drill and
formation of this company are particularly
requested to attend.
By order of Captain.
